TL;DR – Hello! Long time, but out of practice, tabletop gamer introducing myself to the WH40k hobby and game.
Longer – I’ve been aware of WHFB & WH40K since about 1990. All started with a CD cover for a band called Bolt Thrower, and the album was titled “Realm of Chaos.” They were definitely fans of the IP! I was more of a D&D guy at the time, but I often saw the books and miniatures at the same hobby stores I shopped at. Years later I played the Dawn of War RTS games and WH Online (lol) which is where I started to really be interested in the lore. Now (after much lore obsessing) I’m taking the plunge into the real business of the hobby and game.
Bought my Dark Vengeance set in January, and enough paints to do the Tactical Marines and Terminators (per Duncan’s YT instructions anyway). As time has permitted (have a 4 year old I’m hoping to share the hobby with … in a few years, but time is scarce and the whole adulating thing is time consuming) I have assembled most of the Dark Angels. I’m hoping to have the set built and most of the painting by June, which should be just in time for 8th Edition if the rumors out of Adepticon are to be believed.
I really wanted to learn the art / modeling part first which is why I bought DV and am taking my time with it, but as a long time gamer I _can’t stop_ reading about the rules and game. The tourneys and list building is fascinating to me. I’ve spent more time on 1d4chan.org looking over tactics and in Battlescribe building pretend armies than my employers would surely like. I also find the prospect of the social interaction interesting as I’m not extrovertedly inclined (in fact, I’m all kinds of anxious even registering here). So sharing WIP pics and the occasional battle report will be good. I tend to be a contrarian so as soon as I read that an army is “unplayable” I want to play them. I’ve got a Militarum Tempestus / Astra Militarum / Inquisition list I can’t wait to share and build, even though I’m utterly unqualified and am likely making things hard on myself when I finally get to a get in a few LGS to play.
In any case, I’m really looking forward to sharing and learning here. I’ll probably lurk more than post, but who knows. Will be good to get out of my old man head and actually talk to people! Maybe …

Same here. I was aware that the game existed for probably about a decade. I saw it at the game store one day when going in for magic cards, researched it a bit, and been wanting to play it since, but never bought into it because of the cost. Being 14 and not having a job meant I couldn't buy books and modell. Bolt Thrower actually reminded me about it a few years later, then Space Marine and Dawn of War sold me on it when I dropped magic, and I saw a Start Collecting Chaos Marines box in the mall a week ago and finally I'm buying into it, and Warmachine.
War Master is a fantastic album BTW.

"War Master" is a great album. When I bought DV in January I told the store guy about Bolt Thrower and how this band basically sold me on the game (admittedly took 27 years, but still helped sell me). Alas, he had no idea what I was talking about. Feel like that should be part of the Games Workshop store training: "Yeah, this obscure band from the 80's had their first two CDs cover art done by Games Workshop artists!"
Probably wouldn't move any more models, but someone (me) would think it's cool.
I listen to "Those Once Loyal" when I'm working on my models now.

Welcome!
No need to be shy sharing your models and battle reports on here. Most of the time you will get good, honest, constructive feedback if you ask for it, but people are always polite, in my experience anyway.
I'm looking forward to seeing your stuff.
