With Papa Smurf back in command, I am wondering whether there should be a divide in the Imperium. Should Papa Smurf go against the high lords, and splinter the Imperium. In this way, the Imperium is divided, with two major factions. Obviously to keep the Imperium united would be the best move for Mankind, but for plot should he do it. So Terra becomes capital of the Imperium, and the Smurf's get their homeplanet. This I think would advance the plot signafcantly, you could chapters aginst chapters, and finally instead of the idea of Chaos killing the Emperor, it still make the heretics a real threat, however does not immeditaly mean the Imperium has no hope.

"Enemies of the Imperium, hear me. You have come here to die. The Immortal Emperor is with us and we are invincible. His soldiers will strike you down. His war machines will crush you under their treads. His mighty guns will bring the very sky crashing down upon you. You cannot win. The Emperor has given us His greatest weapon to wield. So make yourselves ready. We are the First Kronus Regiment, and today is our Victory Day. " - Governor-Militant Lukas Alexander, Commander 1st Kronus Regiment

Didn't he metaphorically and literally backhand most of the High Lords of Terra when he got there already?

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I like that the Imperium is run by a bloated, byzantine bureaucracy of ignorant religious zealots. If he starts to change that I hope there is a civil war.

I'm not exactly anti-Guilliman, I just like that there are no good guys and 40k and he seems far too reasonable. To be a little more clear it's not that I want everybody to be mustache-twirling villains, but rather that those with good intentions are still horrible from our perspective. Like, the homicidal space nun isn't burning people alive for the fun of it, she is trying to save people's souls.

I must admit I haven't read the Gathering Storm books yet, I've just read a bunch of summaries. It's possible that GW will have RG change things but do it in a way that appeals to me.

I'm not saying that what I want is the only right way, it's just my personal preference.

From a tabletop standpoint a civil war could be more of a justification for all the IoM vs IoM fights. Not that it can't be justified now, it just makes it easier.

doo eet, fracture the imperium!

unfortunately I forsee te only real changes being that the limit to 1k marines per chapter being lifted (in the black Templars case they just send a report with their real numbers) as the campaign books seem to be doing quite well with model support I think we will keep seeing this happening. more primarchs awaken until everybody is back maybe including the lost legions because lord knows releases like that will sell toy soldiers. a united imperium of man arises as the sole good guys (helmed in that direction by matt ward) and xenos factions and chaos only exist to give mary sue space marines something to beat on.

If they tie it in to be similar to how the Roman Empire split East and West in actual history, then sure. GW has done much to emulate the Roman Empire in the 40K mythos, and they could still draw from history for some cool ideas: Have two factions that are basically identical to each other, use very similar strategies in warfare, but treat each other with a mutual respect based on their shared origins. Except in Rome's case, it was more a logistical plan to divide up the Roman Empire to better manage it, as it was getting old and cumbersome to manage the same things over and over. Rome, like the Imperium, felt its greatest when conquering everything, which led to a civil war not long after it had conquered a lot of territory. Then many years of minor growth, dealing with exterior and interior threats, and then finally a slow decline.

While I don't want to see any MASSIVE changes in the Imperium, having a second capital and group of leadership (by way of Guilliman and any other returning Loyalist Primarchs) could help shake things up a bit without ruining all the years of fluff and stories that have come before now.

Actually that quite an interesting idea. I would be up for that, they may have a few incursions over who is command of certian worlds, etc. However it would be a division that wouldn't destroy all of Mankind, (plus its based off the Romans).
