Hi Dakka,
Recently acquired betrayal at calth as it seems such a good offer, and I had 3 drop pods on sprues already.
I traded my terminators for a friends Contemptor, so now the only 2 ironclad models in my collection are a twin-kheres Contemptor, a Melta-Fist Contemptor, and 3 drop pods.

How do I organise my 30 Infantry? I have no real legion preference if there's a distinct advantage to running one over the others? My mental image is 30 marines coming out of Pods in the opponents face, though loadouts are a mystery to me as I'm not even sure you're allowed drop pods in 30k? Grav doesn't exist? how about lascannons? -is there a RoW that unlocks pods??

if someone could please talk me through this I'd appreciate it greatly, I've ordered the relevant books (I think they're the right ones), all I need is an estimated points and recommended loadout so that I can start assembling without worrying about later on.

Cheers,
GamerGuy

Night Lords Terror Assault. 30 Dudes with Volkite dropping in with a Chainfist Cortus w/ twin Grav and a Leviathan will dish out some pain.

If you want to go more generic, the Orbital Assault RoW unlocks Pods to units that can take Rhinos (and for some other choice units).

GamerGuy, please go read this thread

The Legion you choose will have a HUGE influence on the army you make. There is no such thing as a "Generic" Space Marine in 30K. Each Legion has unique Rites of War, abilities, and equipment available only to that Legion.

Unless you take a specific Rite of War unlocked by your Preator, Consul, or Primarch, Dedicated Transport Drop Pods are not available to troops. The Anvilius and Kharybdis Drop Pods are available as Fast Attack and Heavy Support choices respectively.

Grav weapons do exist, but they function very differently then in 40K. Lascannons are around as well. However, Legion Troop Squads come in 10-20 models, and all except the Sergeant have the same weapons- Bolt Pistol, Bolter, and an optional CCW for extra points. The Sergeant gets the typical upgrades. There are no other weapons available to a Legion Tactical Squad. Legion Support Squads are 5-10 models and all have to be armed with plasma, melta, combi, or volkite.

The Rite of War you are looking for is the Orbital Assault that grants Terminators the Deepstrike rule, and any infantry squad that has a Dedicated Troop Transport option may take a Drop Pod instead. I must caution you though. There is no Null Deployment in 30K. If at any point during the game you have no models on the table, you lose. It's the Sudden Death rule found in the Horus Heresy L:egions Astartes Age of Darkness Army List (the first Red Book you should purchase).

Oh, for recommended points, look around at your meta. 30K is meant to be played at 1,750-3,000+ points. The "Sweet Spot" is 2,500 points.

How you organize your Infantry depends heavily on your Legion and what you want to do. For my Sons of Horus, I run two 20 model Legion Tactical Squads with extra CCW's, and an attached Apothecary that foot slog across the table. This is because I get +1 BS when shooting bolters at 12", and I get extra attacks in close combat if I outnumber you. On top of that, the Rite of War I take, The Long March, gives me Relentless in my deployment zone, Fleet in No Man's Land, and Crusade in the enemy deployment zone. On top of that, I run a couple units of Justarian Terminators that also count as scoring units.

There are a ton of options available and ways to play your Legion! Welcome to 30K, and I hope you enjoy the Heresy! Or, I should say the Liberation of the Imperium by Horus!

If you are okay with heresy, and like the Gal Vorbrak models, Word Bearers can make a great drop assault army with The Last Of the Serrated Sun RoW.

But Tamwulf really hit the nail on the head.
