Hi, new to Dakka and 40k so apologies if this is not the appropriate forum to ask this question.

I'm interested in buying a starter kit but I'm not really keen on painting up the chaos army in the Dark Vengeance kit and the Shield of Baal: Deathstorm prices on ebay seem a bit excessive in comparison. So all that leaves is Battle for Vedros. However having watched a few battle report videos I think I would get bored pretty quickly with the simplified rules in Vedros.

My question is: Could I get of copy of the full 40k rules and use those in a game with the Vedros models? Or would I perhaps also need the Ork and Space Marine codices (I actually own the Space Marine codex already but not Ork).

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you certainly could use full 40k rules. the Battle for Vedros models were originally put out in the Assault on Black Reach starter set for 5th edition 40k. Many a person (myself included) used those sets for 40k armies.

Getting the Ork Codex would be good for going full 40k with it since you have the SM codex. You could probably pick up one of the mini-rulebooks for 40k fairly cheaply off of Ebay.

Sadly yes. You need the codexes.
Vedros is an "ok" starter but "the powers that be" Didn't include enough stuff in there to form a CAD (the basic 40k detachment). You'd need an additional 5 space marines for a cad and an additional 4 terminators to play with a terminator squad. I'd suggest finding used minis on ebay to flesh out your starter list.

Great, I might look at picking up the Ork Codex. Thanks very much for the helpful info.

You should have seen Vedros in it's full glory. It's original incarnation, Assault on Black Reach, is the undisputed best starter set ever released when it first came out. 1 squad of Tactical Marines, 1 commander, 5 Terminators, 1 Dreadnought, 1 Warboss, 3 Deffkoptas, 20 Boyz 3 Nobz and the rulebook for a paltry sum of 65 CAD (I think it was like 50 USD or something).

I would not be surprised if it was single-handedly to blame for everyone owning a space marine army.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I think it might have been $60 US, I recall thinking that it was basically $30 per side with rulebooks and such thrown in for free. It was definitely one of the best deals around (especially considering it was the only place for plastic deffkoptas)

Ah right. That was from before our dollar went down the crapper.

Assault on Black Reach was $100 USD when I got into the hobby, but even then it was a huge bargain. Metal (METAL) Deffkoptas were $33 USD each, so if you just wanted plastic Deffkoptas, it was a good price. And then you add in everything else, and it was glorious.

My brother and I "rescued" the last two Black Reach boxes from our local GW right when 6th edition was coming out. I don't think we ever did anything with them though...

But yeah, the current Vedros kits are pretty good. They are lacking in unit size and composition, but it's still a solid way to get started with Orks and Space Marines.

It had the misfortune of being introduced just before GW started their policy of "annual pricehikes". Just before it was discontinued, it nearly doubled in price here in canada.

Which is only a testament to how good value it was. Even after half a decade of price hikes it was STILL good value.
