Hi all, 2nd and 3rd edition gamer here just returning.
In the past we have played 5k or 10k points per person (with different detatchments coming in 'waves') So I have seen 20k to 40k forces on the table top. 6x8 or 8x8 or 6x12
So unless you do detachment in waves it seems very unwieldy to play. {waves are great as forces are constantly getting slaughtered so you never have too much on the table....considering lol}
I am currently using a 28x28 garage for our weekly games. Next year I would like to toy with the idea of a mega floor game.
Has anyone played a mega game on the floor?
How do you do set up and do all forces start at same time?
How do you manage walking and other tedious gameplay mechanics?
Any insight would be great!
Thanks

never played a mega-game on the floor, but I did play a game with strategically placed tables so people could get around (we deemed the "gaps" as being some kind of super-drowning ocean so it's uncrossable, but you could still draw line of sight across it).
However generally where you deployed was where you were gonna stay for the entire match. The board was so huge that unless you had something with ridiculous range (titan weapons), combat was basically limited to the standard 40k board.
The only people who had to walk around were the ones who brought flyers and titans, the only things realistically able to actually cross the game board during the duration of the game. It was basically like a three-layered battle; Small skirmishes between clusters of troops, flyers taking potshots at whatever they can, and Titans shooting at each other pretending everything else didn't exist.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |

We played on the floor once 16ft x 24ft. 16k points per side

Probably use something like masking tape to mark off the edges of the game space and provide clear walking spaces. Nothing worse than a mini accidentally getting crushed.

Played a number of games on the floor, but never a truly huge game.
I think the floor could work well, but there are some things that need to be considered:
Animals and children would probably have to be kept out for fear of them crunching stuff.
Likewise clumsy, unobservant and/or drunk people would probably have to be kept out.
People with bad knees and backs will probably be cursing you by the end of the day.
Like MechaEmperor7000 said, there's a bunch of ways you can arrange multiple tables with gaps representing impassable terrain or multiple levels.

This is good idea. Use factory style floor things for area's that you can't and can step on.

I do like the idea that each 'area' of the battle is its own thing and have its own turn sequence
I could see titans and flyers being the first phase/order of battle, and then players can go to their own part of the battlefield and when everyone catches up the turn can wind down and the next turn can start with different phases or Order of Battle
Automatically Appended Next Post:
If I do a map that is 24'deep by 16' wide
. I wonder if I can make it on wheels so that we can 'assemble' the map at the end of each turn and then pull it apart to do the different sections of the battle>
Any thoughts on a table with wheel system?
thanks all

Man, this would have been the perfect opportunity to give each of you like 5 free chimeras to be used for ferrying troops over. You missed a golden opportunity to be the only people ever to properly make use of the Chimera's Amphibious rule.
