What is a good formula for painting a Candy Apple Blue?

The GW way would probably be Stormhost Silver followed by the technical paint Soulstone blue.

I was thinking a bright blue (probably Cygnar Blue from the P3 range) and then Tamiya X23 Clear Blue?

Anyone used Reaper's Perl colors or even Badger Ghost Tints for Candy Apple Blue?

I think this can give you the approach to making this effect:

In your case you will drop the green and go with:
- Prime Black
- Basecoat Vallejo Air Steel
- Drop the Green, just apply more coats of Tamiya Clear Blue (or their Gunzee analog Mister Hobby).

If you do not own an airbrush, the guy have a hairbrush tutorial as well. Althou you will never be able to get the Apple Blue effect with hairbrush (or at least I think so, there could be a way)

Alternatively you can go for Mig Metallics (This video says it hairbrush really well too if you don't have an airbrush, althou my experience with their golds begs to differ a lot):

Would have thought a base of a graduated airbrushed silver then the Tamiya clear blue would do it nicely and give you a bit of a pre-shade with it.

If you want harder highlights, highlight the silver before you put the blue on, have done this with red pretty well, the blue should work nicely as well

Thanks guys! Yeah, I have an airbrush and that's what I was thinking.

That video was of great help! Looks like it's going to take a lot of clear blue layers to get that deep blue of the Ultramarines though.

Give it a try, you may be surprised, the Red goes on nice for a deep rich colour pretty easily. if you go for a slightly darker base it may help.

Use a gunmetal steel as your first primary colour, and then use a brighter steel to put in highlights.

Doing that will make your blue darker from the get go.
