Hello there !

For the first time, I have to paint a face, Grand Master Voldius' one.

Can somebody give me a short technique or tutorial ? I am not very skilled, so something easy with a good tabletop looking would be great.

Thanks !

There are a lot of ways you could do it.

Probably the easiest way to get decent results is to base with a slightly darker tone than you want to end up with, making sure to do multiple thin coats if you need to in order to get coverage. Then do a sepia or brown wash to get some details in the crevices. go back over most of the face with your base or a mid tone, and highlight with a lighter tone.

Hi, meecham63,

I really like they way they turn out using this technique. Not to hard and very good results in my opinion.

Good luck! Daniel

I do faces pretty much the same way all the time. Mixes vary a bit to keep skintone varied.

Base with tallarn flesh (a midtone flesh).
Wash with flesh wash.
Do eyes - usually VMC Ivory, with a Black-with-a-touch-of flesh pupil. Pure white highlight dot sometimes.

Clean up face with tallarn flesh.
First highlight add a touch of light mud (light yellowbrown 'bone' colour).
Second highlights add a touch more.

This leaves you with a 'flat' face. Its fine for tabletop, but is a little 'mask-like'. Glazes bring it to life:

Glaze strengths vary greatly depending on the final tone needed.

Glaze lower lip with a dark red (VMC burnt cadmium red) or purple. Perhaps mix in some flesh tone or brighter red depending on the end tone aimed for.

Glaze cheeks and nose with blood red (VMC flat red).

Glaze under eyebrows and under eyes with a purplish blue (VMC Oxford blue is nice).

For stubble, glaze with a mix of fleshtone and dark grey.

Re-highlight where needed, and 'stripe' the lower lip to give it some texture.

Usually takes me between 15 and 20 minutes to complete a face through the steps above. Typical result:
