When causing wounds, do you:

A) Roll to hit, Roll to wound, make saves, and then do damage for each unsaved wound across the unit?
ex. I hit 3 times, wound 2 times, opponent fails a save roll which would then be 1, 2, D3, D6 Damage into the unit.

OR

B) Roll to hit, Roll to Wound, Allocate each wound, make saves, and then each unsaved wound becomes 'X' Damage on that single model?
ex. I hit 3 times, wound 2 times, he allocates 2 wounds, rolls saves and fails one which is then 1, 2, D3, D6 Damage on that single model.

OR

C) Roll to hit, roll to wound, each wound becomes 'X' Damage, then roll saves?
ex. 3 shots into a unit hit, 2 cause wounds, damage characteristic is D3 so becomes 5 wounds, opponent rolls 5 saves and then allocates them into his unit.

I've played a couple of games and this doesn't seem to be very clear. I just want to make sure I'm playing it right. The smaller rulebook is nice, but also doesn't have a lot of places to reference when in need of an answer.

It is fairly clear to me.

A.

Although it is important to note that any ability saves that trigger when a "wound or mortal wound is inflicted" are taken post damage.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Definitely A, and the correct addendum by bottle.

@darkblack - thanks for the completely useless response.

@bottle - Thanks for the clarification. Helpful, as usual. Thank you.

It seemed clear to me, but in the couple times I have reread it, it seemed like there were a couple of possible interpretations.

Yeah, it's one of those things that can be a little confusing at first, like the technicalities of Pile-Ins or the points system. Hopefully you'll manage to get some games in and pick it up from there because once you have got a good grasp of the rules (and it doesn't take long once you start playing) they run like clockwork in the back of your head and you'll come to appreciate how awesome the simplified core ruleset is

This is definitely something i've felt some uncertainty with, so i'm very glad you asked, fenrisian, and that bottle gave such a clear answer.

I tend to second guess myself a lot, clarification are great.

realism is a lie

A is how I play it. And then special things that can ignore wounds such as deathless minions the death battle trait, applies to the actual damage not the wound. For example if I fail three saves and the damage is six, I would roll 6 dice for deathless minions
