I'm finally going to venture into the exciting world of magnetizing models, however I'm not sure what the most typical size magnet is?
It seems like the majority of magnetized models seem to be using 3mmx1mm disc magnets. I'd be magnetizing medium sized models such as Dreadnoughts, some monstrous creatures (treelords as an example), and things like turrets on predators/whirlwinds/etc etc, nothing really tiny like individual troops, and nothing massive like titans.

As far as I can tell, no one locally sells the rare-earth magnets so I can see in person their actual sizes. Some of the online site will place a penny next to them, but it's still hard for me to tell the exact sizes (I'm awful at eyeballing estimates).

Silly question, but have you tried googling? I mean, at least Predator/Dread should have plenty magnetization tutorials...

You can never habe enough 3x1 or 3x2 magnets.
Get 100 or 200 and you will be fine.

For larger Models i usually See what I need before buying

Thank you for answering my question and not being one of those "google it" people.

I use 2mm x 2mm for most everything, but that’s more infantry then tanks. I do own some 3mm, which tend to be the ones used in vehicles. A bit bigger might work, but careful about going too large, even tanks have some space issues.

For Marines Ich don't See why I would need anything smaller than 3mm. They fit in Hands and Arms, which ist the smallest stuff you want to magnetize.

2mm magnets are all Lot weaker

Take a look at https://www.amazingmagnets.com/ for your magnet needs. They have every shape and size imaginable and can even make custom magnets. They have dimensions for every magnet so it is easy to find imperial or metric sizes. The bonus is they have a free sample pack of magnets you can get when you place an order so you can use the free samples to gauge what size magnets you need and order from there.

I tend to like using 3x2mm magnets for most of my work.

For the things that are heavy/obnoxious to handle on my 3x2's I also have a handful of 5x2mm N52 grade magnets that will hold up Resin Knight Weapons without a problem.

The strength as well as the size is important, and that's the N-grade you see on listings. N52 is a good strength, though in most cases you can get away with a little lighter strength on your 3x2's.

oddly enough there are very few predator magnisation tutorials....other than the quick one I did for the whole turret. I used 2 12x1 magnets and some .25mm plasticard
*edit*

I have done 2 this way and they both hold nice and strong

For most things, 3x1 or even 2x1 will be fine.

A 5x2 is enough to hold the arms on my biggest monsters.

Remember, you can stack magnets to increase the strength and don't need the same number (or even size) on each surface, so you feel it's not strong enough you can drill a deeper hole in the body where there's more room and put two stacked magnets in there instead of just one.

I found that in addition to a drill, a flat-headed screwdriver works great for carving out a flat-bottomed hole with a good surface for the magnet to stick to (a drill on its own tends to leave a hole with an angled bottom).
