Which army do you think stands out from the rest for being likable for the right reasons. (I mean my favorite armies are the Chaos Marines and the Orks, but in real life, I would stay the hell away from them.)
I think Personally think the Salamanders and Harlequins. The Salamanders because they actually care about ordinary humans and would give their lives for them and the Harlequins for being free of racial prejudice. Another would probably be anything Nurgle related (those great unclean ones seem pretty jolly fellows for being bolted sacks of bile.)

Tau can be alright, because they're more likely to make you comfortable so they can convert you than to murder you (at least if you're a noncom). If you don't mind a bit of slime and zombie virus Nurglites are quite hospitable. And if you're a good Emperor-worshipping citizen then Ogryn are supposed to be super chill, if liable to accidentally crush your hand when they go for a fistbump. For me though Jokaero take the cake. Think about it: though they are hard to find, skittish, have trouble communicating, and are capable of killing you in more ways than you can imagine, the fluff has them be not very warlike, they'll give you all sorts of unique gadgets if you befriend them, you never need to worry about someone else attacking you because you're protected by some of the most technologically advanced guys out there, and space monkeys are awesome. If they start trying to pick lice out of your hair, just tell them no.

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

Tau first come to mind, even if the ethereal cast brainwashes people Tau or Human, quality of life would be way better than most places in the Imperium or other civilisations.

I imagine life on an Eldar craftspeople would be fine for the Eldar at least.

Even in the Imperial guard there are commanders who inspire men rather than motivate them with fear, yeah you're going to die at some point probably pretty soon, but given that life is so horrible at least you can have a laugh with squadmates and enjoy some semblance of normality between engagements. They're humans just trying to hold everything together in a crapsack universe, and that I find inspiring/uplifting.

Space wolves/Salamanders as well as the Lamenters deserve a mention too, they don't get too swept up in everything to forget basic compassion/humanity.

Space Wolves.
Sure they're monstrous glory hounds and monstrous in general but there is more to them than that.
The Wolves are taken late in comparison to other Chapters, they've had families and fight harder to protect people because they remember being people, there's also the very real fight to keep their own humanity, knowing you might turn into a berserk, slobbering monster either makes you avoid people or cherish your connections to them.
The Space Wolves' idea of comfort is questionable but they are hospitable - in so far as biggoted religious nutters can be at any rate.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

It's hard to argue with thst logic.
What guy doesn't tolerate absolute torture for cars and women?

Vigo. Spain.

1- Salamanders if you are a human and maybe even a Tau or friendly Eldar. They just go back and live in Nocturne with his previous family. What its more to love in the grimdark of the 40th millenium that have your uncle Brother Siverius visit you for christmans and gifting you a Master-Crafted Child-shized Flamethrower? Yeah!! Nothing!!

2-Tau. Yeah, don't let the Internet overexageration about how grimdark they are and how Ethereals go genociding and sterilizing and braiwhasing people. Just a read to his codex will wash those things away. Like, they move humans from their planets in the borders of the Tau Empire to defend them from Imperial retaliation and give them new homes in the more secured planets of the Tau Empire. Is that being threated as second class citizens? No.

3-Nurgle. Papa Nurgle is best Nurgle. Nothing more to say here.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I honestly never saw that angle, I've probably just reading different writers.

It has more to do with the community IMO. People play up certain aspects of the Space Wolves more than others, specifically the fact that they drink alcohol and get into fist fights, and do/say whatever they want. That's a textbook frat boy.

Fair call but is the text book frat boy risking life and limb for a community that hates him and considers him a freak and an abomination? To me that rings closer to Highway Patrol.

Not on tabletop, and not in actual fluff, but I've always appreciated the humble Imperial Guard average joe soldier, trying to hold their own against the unspeakable horrors of the 41st millennium.

Agreed, it's always been the lowly guardsman for me. In particular the vets, who know exactly what's out there but still go and fight it.

I've always been sympathetic to the Iron Warriors and Thousand Sons, but never considered them likeable.

IG Drop troops. They fly in, kill the bad guy, get the girl, and split before it gets weird.

There's a few choices I can think of.

-Tau Empire
Pretty much the only good guys. A more cruel Federation, but pretty much the only 'Good' guys you can find in the universe. For that, I like them. Facing off insane Warp-allied forces they can't understand, an endless bug tide, a bunch of genetically-engineered monsters, an ancient species of religious fanatics with insane technology, an even older species of magic-users that can't be understood, their sadistic cousins of torturers, a species even older than all others who enslaved their own gods and now want to deal with all these new guys who showed up on their turf. They're left there, the basic analogies for classic sci-fi humans as a young race that's rapidly advancing that promotes unity and has a gak ton to learn.

-Imperial Guard
Sure, they're led by sociopaths and evil men, but they grunts are just human beings trying to survive, you kind of have to like them.

-Forces of Nurgle
Creepy, gross mucus monsters, but Papa Nurgle loves his forces and they love him. They only want to spread his love and introduce you to some friends. You're looking pretty lonely, buddy. I have millions of plague virus cells that would love to be your friend.

-Orks
Are they a genetically engineered species of brutal fungus warriors? Eh... yeah, definitely. But come on, there's not a lot of true malice. They're just a bunch of guys having the greatest party ever and doing what they were made for. Sure, it has horrible consequences, but they seem like they're having great fun. It's not their faults that the others can't appreciate how lucky they are to get invaded by a WAAAGH! because of the great fun it is.

-Thousand Sons
A Chapter of Scholars and Sorcerors who tried to do what was right and were crushed thanks to the actions of Horus and those damned Space Wolves, now cursed with many simply trying to get their brothers back to humans. Very sympathetic motive, cool background.
