I just took a dive and bought myself 3 sets of the genestealer cult minis from the overkill deathwatch box as a cost saving way to start a genestealer army.

I was wondering if anyone who's also done this can give some advice on how they built their army. One thing i'm running into is that there are no leaders for the neophyte squads since those must take a pistol and close combat weapon. Also the number of models in the units are different in the actual genestealer codex from what they are in the overkill rules, so i've got odd numbers, example only 3 formations include neophytes but each one requires exactly 2 squads, not x-y number. So how did you put your list together?

Make sure to do as much converting as you can. You'll want an Iconward and at least some Metamorphs from your models.

Start with the Brood Cycle detachment MSU, and expand it with the Subterranean uprising. From 3 boxes you should have 36 Acolyte models, so 2x5 in the brood cycle, 2x5 in the uprising and convert at least 10 into metamorphs, giving you 6 acolyte models to use at your leisure. Use your 6 Genestealers as your obligatory Brood Cycle stealers, 4 Abhorents in the brood cycle and the remaining 8 in the uprising.

Remember that the Iconward has a 24'' 6+ FnP Bubble, and gives abhorents a 4+ FnP, which is actually not half bad if you avoid Str 8.

When you get the chance pick up the SPACE HULK 'stealers, they are always cheap (like £30 for 20 odd stealers + lord) and great models, then run the first curse formation.

I'm sure you can come up with some sort of list you like between the Brood Cycle, Subterranean uprising and First Curse at 1850-2000

Thank you for the advice. I didn't think about the iconward, i'm sure i have some random stuff left over on my skitarii sprues that will work for that.

Also, don't worry about squad leader models. The only time it's really worth taking a squad leader is when you summon a unit, and get all the upgrades for free.
