I'm fairly new to Tau (My Second Army), and was wondering if i should get the Tau Codex as i don't have that yet, but i know 8th Edition will be out soon and i want to know if i should get a Codex now or wait for the New Tau Codex that will be releasing?

You can't really play without it, so buy it. It does sound as if there will be a new edition soon, but a new codex is unlikely to be out the following day. No promises, though.

Just play casually with friends for now untill 8th, but it depends if you think you will get your moneys worth in the next 2 months where it becomes obsolete.

No one has a definitive date for 8th dropping and the fact codices will remain has all but been solidly confirmed via the rumour mill. So until the Tau codex gets revamped you are good.

Long story short - yes buy the codex and if you have any concerns regarding obsalesence get a second hand copy to save money.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

At this point, you could be a colossal jerk and find it online and print out the rules, stick them in document protectors in a folder, and absolutely no one would rag on you.

Mob Rule is not a rule.

As for rumours saying codices will still be valid, the rumour mill is also there could be AoS type dataslates like AoS Warscrolls. So codices could be invalidated. So we may be getting stats/rules for units for free.

Just think of June being the release of 8th edition. (not saying it is, but for sake of argument.) Will you get your monies worth in the next 6 or so weeks?

Now that I started working and I got free money again to buy stuff, anything 40K I am holding out on buying. I did buy the Gathering Storm III but I am not buying it for rules but for the fluff and reading and wanting the minis so the money is worth it for me. Codices and other books I am not buying because I don't feel I will have my monies worth and would like to try and make a WYSIWYG army coming back I am holding off until I see what 8th brings.

For me, I can wait and not play or play with what I have now. Can you? That is the question. If you buy now, will you get your monies worth? If not wait. Another option is only buy the rules digitally. Is that an option? Not sure how much it is but say it's $30 or so bucks. Would that be worth it for 6 weeks of gaming or that $30 or so going to the new rule set that my guess would be around $100 if and when it comes out.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Well said Davor.

The value of any item is inherently different amongst others.

The codex also has fun reading. It's not a total waste.

Even if warscrolls are available for free, it's still nice to have.

I would personally NOT buy any rules or codices at all until 8th comes out, just to be safe.

I am eching would not yet buy. honestly you can get by with battlescribe with tau in casual settings to hold you over a few months. there is always the going through non-legitimate means. I know I usually download armies I am debating trying codexes before buying if my flgs does not have that one in stock. when I compared dark elder and tau reading the codexes convinced me to get tau for example though rather than printing and using I wen the buy the book route at that point. But in this case if 8th comes with warscrolls and updates I would not risk the codex purchase.
