I am trying to rebase several models to which I originally PVA glued sand and grass flock. I'm now going back and using a mud texture instead and wanted to reach out for any advice before I moved forward. Are there any recommended techniques for removing the basing materials? Or should I just layer the mud extra thick and try to avoid the bushes?

I usually just dig around the edges with my hobby knife until a chunk comes loose or a section starts to peel from the edge of the base. You should be able to peel / cut away the section you don't want once that happens.

What did you originally base them with?
You may be better off getting new bases and using clippers and a chisel xacto tip to remove the base entirely.

A sneaky trick is to let them sit in a shallow pool of water. The PVA will go soft and you can scrape it off.

I'm going to try that sneaky tip udo, good thinking!
They were originally based with PVA glue, gw grass flock, and sand. I want to go to Vallejo mud and puddles with water effect.

Assuming the sand hasn't been painted water will do the trick.

Even if the sand has been painted, water will do the trick. As said above, just let the bases soak in water and it will loosen the glue.

Isopropyl alcohol and methylated spirits (ethanol mixed with methanol to stop people drinking it) also both dissolve pva (they will also strip acrylic paint, though).
