I'm thinking about starting a detachment of Skitarii to back up my IG forces, how well do they stack up against Tau units? On paper they seem like solid units, reasonably sturdy for their price. But I wouldn't mind a second opinion, especially if there's any Skitarii players around!

Also how exactly does the Haywire rule work? From my interpretation is seems like I would roll to hit as usual and then go to the haywire damage table, regardless of the vehicle's armor, is that the process? Seems like very reliable damage against armored targets.

with a new edition in early june I would note that any answer you get right now could be SWIFTLY obselete. I'd hold off purchase until June and 8th edition

In any case, welcome back! The new edition rumored to hit around early-mid June will come with complete new codex for every current army. In fact, GW is giving away vouchers for anyone purchasing old codexes from the 22. Apr - you guessed it, 10th of June (8weeks).
