Hey guys,

So I've been thinking in recent weeks about how I play games with a number of my close friends and I've come across a few expectations that we have for each game in terms of what to expect in a list. Let me exemplify this by relating this to games with my friend who plays Dark Angels.

-- If we play anything less than 1,500 Points, neither of us will field Flyers without prior warning;
-- If we play anything less than 2,000 Points, neither of us will field SHV's without warning;
-- If we get into a situation where one or both of use want to try some relatively ridiculous lists (because they employ ridiculously under-powered or over-powered combos, or we want to try an under-powered list because it;s fluffy), we let each other know before we start list-building;

This got me thinking about the following question:

At least among your regular gaming group, are there similar assumptions that you make?

For example, are you like me and my friends where you can safely assume that certain things will not be brought based on the Points Limit of the game?

If you have similar assumptions, what are they and what are they based on?

Cheers

Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes establishing courtesy rules before anybody really knows what's going on can make it easier to encourage them.
On the other hand sometimes it's a collossal waste of time.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Lets just shut Dakka down then until 8th comes out?

Within my gaming group we just have a fairly candid conversation about what we want. We don't specify x units at x points, we just say what the rough idea of our list is, what type of game we wanna play, if theres gonna be any crazy things that would be a tough ask for a normally built army (AV heavy, Flyer heavy, SHV/LOW etc). 7th isn't balanced, so I find if you both go in on the same playing field it makes the game fun for both sides.

No, of course not.

The obvious course of action is to mentally block out the memory that 6th and 7th editions ever existed in the first place, hope that nobody needs psychological counseling because of it, and talk non-stop about how awesome 8th edition is going to be.

Though, the general answer to the OP:

By and large, what seems to be the underlying presupposition in my gaming group is that you get what you get. Specify a points limit. Each player brings what they want. And then there's a game.

I usually ask about the opposing army in advance...but not in order to "negotiate" about what's going to be brought. More in order to allow me to determine whether I should bother playing in the first place.

All of this will, presumably, change in 8th edition.

So what? Do we have 8th Edition yet? Are we not still playing 7th Edition?

I mean sure - When 8th Edition comes out, many of the assumptions and house rules that myself and my gaming group abide by will have no purpose or place in 8th Edition, but that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Fair enough. Having a Points Limit (and maybe knowledge of which army/armies your opponent is bringing) is fine. I'm just more curious to know whether or not - for example - people think: "OK I'm entering this game with this person (or these people) under certain parameters (e.g. Points Limit, 'No SHV Choices', etc) - What can I expect out of this game?' Are there any extra parameters that you particular gaming group employs in order to keep games fun and fair?

As I said before, 8th Edition should have no bearing on this discussion.

I am very vocal about my personal list building limitations at my flgs. So, for example, I will only field 1 flying hive tryant for every 1k points in my list. Generally that means everyone should expect 1 flyrant from me.

Keeping everyone knowledgeable about how you build your lists so everyone can try to build a list that will make for a good game is some of the best ways to ensure everyone has some fun.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Occasionally, we will specify terrain, especially if someone wants a cityfight.

This can sometimes lead to list changing, but also, "OK, so how WOULD unit x fare with lots of cover and poor lines of sight?"

I wish I had a solid style like that, I enjoy list building too much.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
