Cultist of Nurgle with Open Sores

I just started my Nurgle Army painting. After looking through hundreds of pictures, guides, and general schemes I think I found one I like.

I wanted to use a technique from Les's Plague Marine painting guide from 6 years ago around the 2 min mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpyoxsJ1UoQ), but its not working as well as I would like, and wondering if anyone had some tips.

Basically after the base coat and a light highlight I spray gloss varnish, let it dry, and then spray Agrax Wash. The wash works great in recesses, but it does not cover the flatter areas as well as in this video. I assume its the fact he is using an ink wash and I am using an acrylic wash?

Either way I really like the dirty kind of look when wiping the model down with alcohol after a gloss coat. Is there any other videos showing this that are more recent? Any tips on this process? Is there a better way to achieve this type of look?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
