Look! I know a lot of people dislike dreadnoughts (I get told they are not strong at all) but I just love them! I love their style, their weight, the fact their undead soldiers! I've finished collecting my DA army to the point I am getting bored collecting them and want to move onto something fun (so I can have my DA be my main serious list but a fun army for when I want to just smile). So I just want a cool squad of multicoloured dreadnoughts! How valid do you think this list would be and do you think any of you guys can help suggest a list? I'm looking for max fun gameplay and still make it challenging for about 500-2000 points.

Rules of the list I want:
ONLY DREADNOUGHTS!
Unbound so can be super mixed up chapters
Can be ranged and close combat dreadnoughts.
500 points min list up to about 2K at most.

Do it! I have an army of just killa kans and deff dredds and it's great fun to play with. Go for them all, including the blood angels ones and the FW chaplain one.

Well you'd need one Deredeo, Iron Hands Ironclad, Space Wolves Venerable with the Axe and shield, Death Company Dread, etc.

Ahhhh! So many dreadnoughts. XD I'm pretty overwhelmed. Being a DA player with only two, I didn't know there were so many different types! Can someone make a easy to understand list?

You don't need to go unbound. Space Wolves and Blood Angels can do it better as bound detachments.

Company of the Great Wolf is one HQ and two Elites instead of Troops.
1xHQ Bjorn the Fell Handed.
6x Elite Dreads options: Basic Dread, Murderfang, Shield and Axe venerable, more Forgeworld dreads than you can poke a stick at.
1x Heavy Forgeworld Leviathan Dread.
Add in the Drop Pods and you'd struggle to stay under 1850.

Blood Angels have a Formation Detachment called "Chapter Ancients" Nothing but Dreadnaughts - a player used it a few months back at one of my local tournaments, dropped two basic Dreads and six Libby Dreads in Lucius Pods. Used Psychic Powers mostly Fulmination and Pyromancy to give them flexibility and just crunched anything that he landed near.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Oh snap! Will have to look into that but I like the idea of an army of different Chapter vets all coming together

40k Wiki has a good list of named Dreadnaughts that might come in useful to you.

Don't forget Bray'arth Ashmantle (Salamanders). 13/12/10, 4HP, Venerable, Extra Armour, smokelaunchers, IWND, Immune to Armourbane, Melta, Rending, Lance and any other rules allowing 2d6 on armour penetration.
6 attacks with Dread FAQ, plus can substitute 1 of the attacks for a special attack that automatically hits all models in base contact with a st5 ap4 attack (so no tarpitting).
Also has Ws6, 2 Heavy flamers that can instead be fired as a tl meltagun (at BS5).
Although he costs 265pts... But he does have a searchlight!

You can make a bound full-dread army. It can be a bunch of formations. Something like blood angels and space wolves.

Yeah but Iron Hands and other Chapter Tactics are better than Wolves and Angels.

My friend made a list with nine dreadnoughts. he won his tournament. it was with a Stormlord interestingly, but in any event, I've seen a ton o Dreads do some work.

9 dreadnoughts I think would be a good max. Just a bunch of pals winning the war against the galaxy!

From a roleplaying standpoint, you could say that the nine were part of one unit of Vanguard Veterans? Maybe make it an even ten of them in the force and they essentially all nearly died and were "saved" and entombed in Dreadnoughts.

Well there is a passage in Waagghhh Ghazgull where the Ork walkers attack one of the water or petrol refineries. Apparently there was no room for vehicles, so the Ork walkers were doing work snipping all the defenders in half with their super scissors until they were fought to a stalemate by a Space Marine task force comprised solely of Dreadnoughts from many of the chapters fighting on Armageddon.

If you wanted your all dreadnought army to be multicoloured, you could model it as a similar task force and paint dreads from all different chapters.

Many years ago I played in a mega battle with my orc dread mob. I believe I had about 17 dreadnoughts and like 33 kill kans. Plus a few squads of boys and some other assorted flavors. The guy across from me had 23 or 24 space marine dreadnoughts. We were on the right flank so we basically got to go one on one. I don't remember what chapter he was using. It was a fun battle though.

As other have stated, get some Blood angles and Space wolf dreadnaughts as well. Their special war gear and psyker dreadnaughts make them a step above the rest.

8th Overhaul!

About 3000 Deamons
2 Imperial Knigts... Soon to be a third

This thread is a bit old now, but I just read it, and I am even more intrigued now that we know more about 8th Edition. I'm a BA player which, as stated, gives me some good options, and it's exciting. With all Dreadnoughts likely having more hull points (or wounds) in addition to saves, there will also not be the same potential for them to just get shot to pieces before they can do anything.

Sort of like an army of mechanical monsters...

5000 pts High Elves 4000 pts, Warriors of Chaos 4000 pts, Dwarfs 3000 pts, Wood Elves and Greenskins too

I remember that story and loved it(that campaign was what drew me to 40k). Even played scenario in similar style once.
