Today in lighter news, there are product recalls across Canada for Bombay Sapphire brand gin, which has been found to have an alcohol content of 77%, as opposed to the usual 40%.

It is unclear if product in British Columbia is affected, but rest assured, dear readers, that our crack team of intrepid reporters shall be investigating this issue further. To all our readers at home, if you are wondering if your Bombay Sapphire is from a good batch or not, simply hold an open flame next to a shot of liquor. Affected batches will be obvious.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Picking up another bottle of Gin is actually on my to-do list. While I don’t generally purchase Bombay, I do enjoy it.

A good rule of thumb is that if a Gin starts with “B” it’s probably pretty decent.

So, every store instantly cleaned out their entire inventory and pocketed the free profits, I'm assuming. Most effective recall ever!

Ordinary 37.5% gin will poison you if you drink enough of it. This 77% Bombay Sapphire just needs more tonic to bring it down to a safe level.

Navy strength gin is 57%.

Navy strength gin is delicious.

I'd totally give 77% gin a go, I'm quite fond of high strength alcohol.

So if someone drank it without knowing the content was way higher than usual, they could get seriously fethed XD

Yes. The danger would be not knowing how much you just drank.

Bob likes to go to the bar on Thursdays after his group meeting and have 2 Bombay martinis and some fried jalapeno poppers. What Bob doesn't know is that his normal 37.5% alcohol bombay gin has been replaced with 77% alcohol gin. He now just drank twice the effective gin as he is accustomed.

Bob then drives home as he always does, and in his impaired condition, Bob gets in an accident and kills Suzy. Bob will now spend the next 12 years to life in jail.

Yeah, but the British Empire was built on Gin and Tonic. Before the charge of the Light Brigade, some cavalry officers had gin as their last drink before charging into battle.

Can be the same be said for Bourbon and Scotch? Nobody built an empire drinking Bourbon

Bourbon and Scotch is a rotten drink. You're wasting both of them by mixing them.

Of course nobody built an empire drinking Bourbon. Building empires is messy, chaotic business and could result in the spilling of one's drink. Spilling Bourbon is unacceptable.

I hope we can all agree that unless your name is Julian, you aren't getting anything done mixing Rum and Cola.

Nah, quite a few empires were both built and maintained by being totally hammered. Did you ever see the drink bill for the guys who signed the American Declaration of Independence?

"In 1787, two days before they signed off on the Constitution, the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention partied at a tavern. According to the bill preserved from the evening, they drank 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, eight of whiskey, 22 of porter, eight of hard cider, 12 of beer and seven bowls of alcoholic punch."

And there's any number of armies where a ration of hard drink was part of the pay for enlisted men (and officers got just as hard but a bit finer stuff). Helps you avoid tummy problems from filthy water, either by drinking only beer or by mixing some hard stuff like rum or vodka in water to kill germs. Not to mention the courage-enhancing properties of alcohol. Sure, you'd like it if your soldiers were sober but sober men sometimes see that there's no way they can win. Give them 2-3 cups of strong drink and a rousing speech and suddenly they're ready to assault the gates of hell for you.
