While I am waiting for 8th addition to come out before I make any purchases, I have narrowed my choices for my new 40k army to be either Genestealer Cults or Tyranids because I want to do something Xenos. Which one is the better one to chose or is more fun to play with as I have no real experience with either.

Depends on what you own and which models you like. I would go for cults cuz the conversion opportunities and chance to collect from so many different model ranges... Nids take a certain kind of person ime.

Both play very differently...

So it depends on what is your preferred play style, and what you like the 'look of'/'story' more?

Currently nids look cooler but cults play better. However thats all probably going to change very soon. So I say wait a bit and see.

I'd wait for the new rules to come out.
With each new edition, there is a shift in the meta such that Nids might get stronger (or not).

You need to make this choice yourself. You will be investing alot of money in this hobby.

My suggestion to aid this has 2 parts:

1. Rules change
Don't base an army on rules unless you are purely in it for tournament wins, in which case you will be swapping armies alot

2. Due to picking on aesthetic, a HQ is a good place to start
Look for a dude you think would be the coolest boss for your army. Having a bad ass boss is a great way to get started on an army.

Both, obviously.

Casual? Which models do you like? Buy those.

Tournament? See above.

If money matters GSC is currently the absolute worst $ spent to points value of models in the game. You need real money bags to build a cult army.

You could do both as they work together quite well (at least they did in 7th).

I would go for a nice mix of the two. Thematically awesome and allows you to pick and choose what you like from both. And if you at some point decide you like one better than the other, you have half the army.

Nids + Cultists.... Nihilists

If you're wanting small-scale I'd go Cults as they models are prohibitively expensive on a larger scale. If you're wanting large scale, then Nids.

Or you could just have a 50/50 mix of the two.
