Mining Asteroid Gamma 1325 Kill Team Campaign

Premise
This will be a three game campaign using the GW Kill Team rules, with a few tweaks. We increased the game size to 400 points, with a team of two versus a single antagonist. An overall structure was drawn up with the conclusion to the campaign differing wildly depending on how well each side played.

I hope to expand the story over time to link several mini-campaigns together and tell a grander story (I’ve got the broad idea, but will leave the details to be fleshed out and directed by the way the games themselves go), but everyone starts somewhere, and for us that is with a nice little Kill Team campaign set on a small asteroid mining base in a minor system out on the Eastern fringe…

Some of the camera work is a little dodgy and I definitely need to work on capturing more of the key moments, but I don't think it's a bad start. Comments and criticisms welcome!

Astral Skulls, I pray to Him that this message reaches you in timee. The Final Judgement will pass the Spottus asteroid field within three days, and I pray to His Divine Majesty that you receive this message and seek me out before the abominations overrun us. Mining asteroid Gamma 1325 has fallen from His light and crawls with the mutant and heretic. I have uncovered a conspiracy spanning the subsector and they come to silence me before my warning can be reach those with the power to prevent catastrophe. Astral Skulls, you are the only ones I can be sure will receive this message and are untainted. You must make best speed for Gamma 1325! Malverin, you must tell them!

<<<My lords, I am deeply troubled by this message. Our Chapter is singled out, our vessel, location and course identified, even my Astropath, Malverin is named directly. I do not see how we can ignore this… invitation. We cannot know if the sender is friend or foe, but we must investigate as soon as possible. Shipmaster Garran>>>

Game 1 – Investigate the transmission

Introduction

The transmission directed to the Astral Skulls strike cruiser originated from a small asteroid mining complex within the Spottus system asteroid belt. Arriving above the asteroid, all attempts to contact anyone on the surface are met with silence. The Astral Skulls could not ignore a plea for help requesting them by name, and together will a small Blood Ravens contingent accompanying them as guests aboard the Final Judgement, deploy a small strike force to the surface to investigate. Requests for landing clearance are met with the same silence, and as they deploy from their Thunderhawk they conclude that the facility has been abandoned. Determined to uncover the source of the transmission, they break into teams and begin a search by auspex. As they move deeper into the tangle of buildings, the shadows begin to lengthen and soon they are set upon by crazed mutants…

The game

5 Tactical Marines /w 1 flamer
5 Scouts /w 1 Heavy Bolter
1 Razorback

The battle

Spoiler:
Mining asteroid base Gamma 1325

What would become the Space Marine deployment zone

Tangled, worn-out buildings comprise much of the base

Scouts infiltrate the facility and begin searching for the source of the transmission

Astral Skulls sweep for signs of the transmission as they move in on the facility

The Sternguard Veteran Sergeant notices something suspicious…

Hidden within the nearby barrel lurks a damaged servo-skull! (it turns out that the objective was right next to the Imperial deployment zone, bully for them!)

Scouts confirm a lot of movement inside the facility; the Tactical Marines form up a defensive line around the uncovered servo-skull

Hideous xenos mutants slink forth from the shadows…

In greater and greater numbers!

14 – The Scout with heavy bolter opens fire and reaps a terrible toll on the clustered aliens (this would go on throughout the game; this guy was a real killing machine)

Genestealers rush towards an isolated Tactical Marine

Further within the facility, yet more Genestealers begin to overwhelm the Scouts

Lightly armed and surrounded, the Scouts are overwhelmed

However, with time to prepare a strong battleline, the Tactical Marines and Sternguard thin out the advancing aliens before they can draw close enough to inflict much damage, and the onrushing horde is routed.

The result

Spoiler:
Victory to the Astral Skulls and the Blood Ravens! The servo-skull is secured, and they get to work trying to extract any information they can from it.

Mining Asteroid Gamma 1325 Kill Team Campaign

Game 2 – Uncovering the truth

Introduction

Genestealer abominations and their foul progeny infest the facility! The Astral Skulls and their Blood Raven allies face down the alien onslaught and beat it back, securing the source of the transmission: a badly damaged servo skull. Little information can be extracted from the damaged machine, however they Astartes resolve to bring the skull and secure the administratum building to investigate further. As they close in on their target, they are again attacked by a swarm of xenos cultists and monstrous Purestrain Genestealers…

The game

Mission: Supply Drop
Modifications: Two sides, 400 points each. Space Marines are two 200 point Kill Teams chosen normally. Genestealer Cultists are a single 400 point Kill Team with a single leader and 6 specialists

Spoiler:

15 Acolyte Hybrids
20 Neophyte Hybrids /w 2 mining laser, 2 grenade launchers

The battle

Spoiler:
Blood Ravens scouts infiltrate further into the tangle of structures and scale the target: the administratum building. They are quickly ambushed by two hungry Purestrains (we started using the Cult Ambush rules for game 2, and these Genestealers hope to enjoy their 6s)

A second wave of xenos surges forward to repel the Imperial task force!

Purestrains slink through the rocks unseen, hoping to catch the Sternguard unawares

Yet more Purestrains emerge from the gloom to assault the Blood Ravens; they are not so fortunate and are quickly incinerated by the Tactical Marine with the flamer

Although unaware of the threat creeping up behind them, the Sternguard aid the Scouts atop the target building and pick off the Genestealers before they can charge the Scouts

The tide of flesh advances down the street, autoguns firing wildly at the Scouts. Several are brought down, leaving the building undefended.

The Tactical Marines advance cautiously into the facility; several are brought down by autogun fire, but the flamer is brought in and begins to clear out the cultist ranks

The Sternguard also advance

One is cut down by the hail of autogun fire as the Acolytes close in

Soon a short and brutal melee erupts, and the Sternguard are overwhelmed

Two of the three skulking Purestrains are gunned down, but the third leaps up at an isolated Marine and tears the encumbered human to shreds

The cultists have inflicted extreme damage, but their numbers are seriously depleted. They try and overwhelm the last of the Sternguard who backs up against the administratum building. In the distance, the Razorback rumbles forward…

The few remaining Neophytes try to shoot down the Tactical Marines, but they are too few and their enemy’s armour too thick. They are themselves gunned down as the Razorback passes by and heads straight towards the target

The last of the Sternguard is brought down by the claws and dulled blades of the Acolytes, but by this point the xenos had once again taken a severe beating and their remaining forces broke, leaving the administraum building to the Space Marines

Incidentally, several Blood Ravens were also in full retreat from the field of battle… no doubt they’ve ‘appropriated’ some Astral Skulls wargear and are off to stash it in the Thunderhawk! Bloody Magpies…
Victory to the Astral Skulls and the Blood Ravens!

The result

Spoiler:
Victory to the Astral Skulls and the Blood Ravens! The aliens are driven back from the administratum building and the secrets held within the servo-skull may just be within reach.

Up next, the conclusion to this little series of games. Will the Astral Skulls and Blood Ravens be able to cleanse the alien infestation, or will they have to retreat from the asteroid and leave it in xenos hands (claws?)

Game 3 – Cleanse the xenos scum

Introduction

Through discipline and devotion to the Emperor the Space Marines once again drive back the Genestealer Cultists, and secure the administratum building. The servo skull reacts almost instantly to being brought back to the data archives, and automatically docks with a nearby data-port, apparently following some pre-programmed routine. As the skull completes the data download, it detaches from the port and returns to rest calmly beside the Astral Skulls sergeant. Unable to extract the data from the skull with the equipment at hand, the Astral Skulls conclude that they should return to the Final Judgement and allow their Techmarine to examine the skull. However, the Genestealer infestation must still be dealt with, and so the Space Marines prepare to launch a decisive strike against whatever foul lair the beasts may be lurking within…

The game

Coming soon...
