Found these on ebay.

The price of wood embelishments seems to vary widely, but these are about the cheapest I've seen. I can't tell exactly from the picture, but they look very close to the thickness of a standard wargames base.

Unfortunately they don't seem to offer a one-inch size or I'd buy a batch, but I thought that some folks might find them useful.
Interestingly, they have 50mm in quanitities of 50 for about the same price and packs of ten 100mm or 120mm for similar prices.

Maybe, but wood is far more prone to warpage - even than MDF.

For larger pieces maybe, but at 30mm, I don't think theres much danger. Just to be sure though it's of course worthwhile to paint and seal the bottom of the base. Also, these appear to be at least 3 ply. I wouldn't worry about warpage.
