Hi DakkaDakka,
After being away from 40k since 2nd and 3rd edition I've decided to make a comeback. I have come close to coming back in past editions, however was put off by the introduction of titans and fliers and mostly because of the lack of balance & power creep issues that plagued the game. After reading up on 8th edition and the changes GW has made in general as a company, I am impressed and feel now is the time to come back (mid life crisis??)
I recently invested heavily in the game by buying about $450 CAD of tyranids. This is abit of a gamble as the rules for 8th haven't been released yet and I haven't even got a clue which units will be good or bad. However, GW has stated that all units will be playable and so I'm taking a risk here and taking their word... I suppose.
Here is what I have to work with:
Tyranid Battleforce (-$130)
3 Tyranid Warriors, 16 Termangants, 16 Hormagants, 8 Genestealers
DeathStrom box set (-$140)
Brood lord, 8 Genstealers, 1 Carnifex, 3 Tyranid warriors
Trygon Prime (-$64)
6 Raveners ($-110)
Also managed to create 5 bases of Ripper swarms.
My goal here is to create an advance guard army with lots of infiltrators and deep striking units that will provide a real alpha strike danger that can pop up from nowhere. I want opponent's to be in fear knowing that no table corner is safe from this tyranid scouting force. Hormagants (for speed) and stealers (for flanking/infiltrate) will be the troops of choice. Warriors will add synapse and some dakka. Raveners, swarms and trygons will provide the alpha strike. Carnifex will provide the heavy lifting or distraction unit.
Current project:
1) Assembly of all units
2) I will be converting 2 Tyranid warriors to Lictors to save money. When I add more warriors, I will convert a 3rd. Love me them Lictors.
Future projects
1) Currently thinking on how to expand. Maybe a "Get started tyranid box" to get 3 more warriors, some gargoyles and a Hive tyrant. Not sure I want a Hive tyrant just yet. Leaning more towards warriors, Warrior prime and trygon prime for synapse at the moment. Most units in the army will be high LD and or ignore Synapse anyway.
2) Or possibly invest in another Deathstorm box set to get more warriors and genestealers. However a second carnifex is not really suited for the army I have in mind.
3) Will most likely be adding 8 more genestealers and at least 12 more hormagaunts in the future. Not sold on the idea of termagants in my army and have bad experiences building and transporting gargoyles in the past.
I've taken up the name HIVE FLEET DRAKON for the time being. Will post pictures of my progress..
