I'm looking for some inspiration kitbashing a few sets of chosen from the dark vengeance to make a pure melee and pure shooty squads. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with them and could provide me with some ideas. Interesting bit mixtures and points you thought made the cleanest cuts for changes. Thank you in advance.

First and foremost I recommend you wait for 8th edition to come out before doing anything. New rules could change the chosen meta. Right now chosen should not be used for melee, special weapons are really their forte.

Also answering your question it depends on what other bits and pieces you have lying around. If I remember correctly chosen keep their melee weapon either way, so it would be easier to make one arm hold a range weapon (melta, flamer, etc), and the other holding a melee weapon.
The 2 bolter twins I'd recommend changing the helmets of at least one of them. Then replace their bolter with special weapon, cut and paste all the hands you need to make it work.
The guy with the power fist. Get ride of the entire power first arm and save it for another model. Get rid of the pistol and add a special weapon. Then replace the power fist arm with a melee weapon.
The twin lighting claw guy - cut off both his arms and replace it with a regularly special weapon being held with 2 hands piece.

BUT AGAIN, 8th edition is coming out real soon. This meta will soon change.

if I remember the set comes with two chosen armed with just bolters. Those are the easiest to convert to shooty variants since you just need to swap out the weapons and fill some gaps. The guns are held across the body, so any modifications should be easy enough to cover up without too much putty skill.

There is one chosen with a power Fist and holding a pistol up. For a shooty setup, simply remove the pistol and add the gun of your choice. The real hard part comes from his power fist, but if I remember the joint isn't that difficult to cut away; you just need an appropriate arm afterwards. Same goes if you wanna make a melee variant without the fist; just replace it with a CCW and arm of your choice. If going for twin weapons on this guy, the pistol arm can be cut off at the elbow I think and you can easily add a lightning claw or fist to it from a standard chaos kit (preferably the one from the Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor).

There is a guy with an axe and pistol. again same dealie with ranged weapons; just replace the pistol with a weapon of your choice by cutting it away from the hand. Unlike Fisty guy up there, the power axe can function as a normal CCW, so for shooty versions you don't really need to do anything more.

The second hardest one is Lightning Claw Guy. His arms comes in two pieces but in such a weird way that i'd recommend gluing them first before cutting. His pose also does not lend well to a ranged pose, so this one is better off being used for a melee guy (with a "come at me bro" pose). As always, cut at the elbow and replace with the forearm and gun/weapon of your choice.

The last one is the Chosen Champion. His hardest part is the arm holding the helmet, which is molded into him. Preserving his parts is near impossible so I suggest thinking this one through before you dig in (literally, you need to do some digging to make certain bits fit). The best way to cover it is with a big gun (recommend the plasma gun), although you can attempt to sculpt the missing pieces if you'er good enough (it's hard, but not that hard). His other arm is pretty easy given it's stretched out like that.

Bitz-wise, the most compatable ones are the Raptor kits, given that they share the same aesthetic.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.
