Subject: Popular skirmish-scale wargames?

Hey guys I'm currently looking for alternatives to Warhammer.
The reason for this is I'm searching for a Skirmish-type game and possibly something that might cost be a bit less $-wise.
The ones I've been looking at are:
Warmachines and Infinity.
Other than these two, are there any other which are Skirmish-scale and popular?
OR can I play 40k / AoS as a Skirmish-scale?
Is it fun?

Grim Dark Angels Interrogator-Chaplain
Vigo. Spain.

Frostgrave. But maybe thats one is too skirmish.
AoS Skirmish/hinterlands and Shado Wars Armageddon for 40k are tons of fun too.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Popular is a bit relative, depends on your area, but around me:
Wrath of Kings
LOTR/Hobbit (scale depending)
Malifaux
Guildball...not sure if it qualifies
X-wing ...same as guildball for whether or not it counts
and of course warmahordes.

What state/city are you in? Might give a better idea of what's popular in your area. For example, if you're in Melbourne, that's Malifaux and Infinity mecca. But those two are certainly very popular in Sydney and Brisbane as well.

I'm currently in Sydney!
Within 30min radius of Central/Townhall if that helps.
I've never heard of Malifaux before! Better look that up as well

Better look that up as well I'd check out wargamerau if you're looking for clubs, specifically the NSW clubs page. I know of SITH in the city, and I'm certain that play Infinity and Malifaux. If you want to trek further out, there's a few of us at Campbelltown that play at the Hall of Heroes that play both as well. Seems Good Games Town Hall, however, is a pretty active spot in the city.

Just note that unless you have amazing self control, most of the mentioned "skirmish" games end up very expensive in the end
Warmachine is also not so much a skirmish game, the common pts played at allows a lot of figures on the table.

If you already have the figures, and enjoy 40K, why not simply play smaller games? I run a school wargames club, and the default games are generally under 1000 points: 1 HQ, two troops, 1 "other".
It means they can get more than one game in. It's pretty straightforward, and might lack some elements others might want - no riptides or deathstars. Tactically, it's fairly low level, but it's fun. Shadow Wars:Armageddon is also a lot of fun.

You should also check out Walking Dead: All Out War. It's at the low end of skirmish model count but: entry cost is low; there are a lot of expansions already available with a lot more in the pipeline; campaign rules are coming imminently and rules for designing and points-costing your own survivors are available as a free download as well as being in the Days Gone Bye expansion set. And can be played solo or coop as well.
Plays out quite quickly on a 2x2 ft area by default but can be scaled up and can get very tense (basically the board is full of dangerous brain-hungry mobile terrain).
