So, I have been told that formations are gone in 8th --- what does this mean for limited edition, named formations, like Strikeforce Deathstorm or Grukk's Rippin' Crew? The reason I ask is that unlike other formations (like the generally available ones in the later codexes or in the downloadable data-slates), these limited edition formations - with named characters like Seegeant Alphaeus - had super-specific equipment choices for each model which one had to follow if one wanted to benefit from the formation in question. Whereas they're still neat for fluff-related reasons, do any of you think that there will be some kind of accommodation that GW will come up with to update these themed forces? Because if not, I just might end up changing the equipment around on these models since the equipment choices in these formations could at best have been called random

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on limited edition formations and 8th Ed.

I don't think there will be and thankfully the removal of those formations won't invalidate any of the models as they were legal load outs either way.

Themed forces like that would go into the narrative play, like you'd play out scenarios with mostly set out lists and they could have rules or something to go along with it. If it's anything like AoS I don't think they'll force the loadouts of the units either, plus being a more relaxed game type you'd likely be able to talk it out with who you were going to play with.

On moon miranda.

These are usually the kinds of things that are valid for one edition and then pop up in a modified form a decade and three editions later. I wouldn't expect any of them to carry over into 8th, especially with the very specific loadouts intact.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

My understanding is that 8th will not be backwards-compatible with earlier unit datasheets and detachments.

The formations themselves will no longer exist but the models should still be legal for their loadouts. Mind you, they might no longer be viable in those loadouts, but they will be legal.

If there were "special characters" like Grukk who were only represented by formation rules and wargear, expect them to be either made into Special Characters (like Krom Dragongaze) or just be a generic instance of that character with specific equipment (Grukk, if I understand it, is a warboss with a combi-shoota, Power Klaw, and maybe Eavy Armor).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
