Ok....so I'm finally going to take the plundge that I have avoided for years and finally get into warhammer. However....with 8th edition looming does anyone think now is a good time to get into 40k or not? I'm a fan of the hobby of building and painting the game is just a bonus. However I just really never liked the way 40k looked....will this new edition have the age of sigmar model effect?

With what we have seen right now, it's the perfect time to jump in . We are essentially all going to be new to the game again, I would just suggest that if you are going to start before 8th hits stores to leave a couple guys in each squad without arms so that you aren't locked into any special or heavy weapons you may not want. Maybe even leave the squad leaders without arms as well.
I would also just start with a few basic units plus HQ and maybe a Fast, Elite and Heavy support if you like the look of them.

How do you mean, "looked"? Do you mean how the models "looked" or how the gameplay "looked"?
This new edition won't do much for any model that currently exists any more than it would have without the new edition. If you like the new Primaris models over the old Marine models, then, by all means, jump in as soon as they are available. The good news is that, aside from the 3-4 different flavors of marines, the rest of the armies do have their own unique look, so most people can find one they like.
If you don't like how the gameplay looks now, then about a month is the time to get a look-see. Many local stores are getting promotional packages to learn about the new edition (I've got three advertising those events on Facebook), so see if they got anything coming and if its able to go with the art style you prefer.

I am unsure what the Age of Sigmar model effect is. I think 8th is shaping up to be a much more entertaining game. In about 2 -3 weeks it will be a great time to get into the game.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Well, a lot of new Dwarf and Chaos models were released. I don't know why they are calling it Age of Sigmar because of all the Dwarf releases. I think there are more new Dwarf units now then there are Stormcast units right now!

I just didn't like the dark and gloomy aspect of 40k's models. Like there were a ton of space marine factions and other than armor color and names everything just felt generic (with the exception of space wolves because I have always had a Viking thing). Age of sigmar's models are insanely beautiful but watching 40k games over the years it seemed to play just fine and right up my alley. I did look at the starter set buuuuut not sure I like the models. The space marines are just so generic and never catch my attention and the other are just too over the top busy looking. If it was chaos marines (from what I saw in previous editions) I would be much more inclined to just buy it and at 150 to not really see myself playing either one is a hard sell for me. Are they going to be releasing the starter boxes shortly after or will I become months behind????

Just buy the core rule book separately. You don't need a starter box at all.

IMHO now is a GREAT time to get in, but wait for 8th to hit. that said if the starter set doesn't work for you don't buy it, 40k has lots of great armies, one is bound to appeal.
as Lance said, the core rules are sold seperatly. my advice? go visit the games workshop site, and take a look at what they have their, see if a model range peaks your intreast.

Agreed. There are a LOT of armies available in 40K. It is one area in which they are not falling short on.

Well, if you're going to play 40k, you might end up painting a lot of them. Eldar and Tau are probably some of the least gloomy looking ones. You'll want to figure out if that's enough to hold your interest. As well if you meet other local players odds are they will be playing one of the dark and gloomy armies, so are you okay playing against them?
There is no reason to buy the starter. On the 17th of June there will be a free 12 page PDF outlining the core rules and you can already find some data sheets in the rumours thread in the News forum. So you could try the game out with substitute counters to see if you actually like it. You could probably do that now given how much of the core rules sheet has been leaked.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Other SM chapter are quite different, like the Dark Angels in robes.
Blood Angels have their gold elites and blood drops.
Salamanders have the dragon scales and heads.
And so on.
Poke around on Forge World's pages and see what they have, on top of the standard GW ranges.
Then there's the Primarus, which are the Sigmarites of 8th edition 40k.
If you want to spend the time doing it, get a set of bits and customise your models as you like.
And, that all depends on whether you go with Space Marines, or something entirely different.
