I guess on the one hand my marines can run as any chapter now, but I liked the part man part machine marines.

You'll be there soon, likely when SM get their codex, probably sometime this summer if I were a betting man. You just don't have any named characters, so you got skipped this time.

I think it is just because they don't have a Special Character unlike all the others. As that is all that each "Chapters" section consists of (other than the non-codex chapters)

Looks like Chapter Tactics aren't exactly a thing right now (expect that in Codex: Astartes or whatever they're going to call it), and Iron Hands never had any named characters, who are the only folks with a fixed chapter designation right now anyway.

So, you can still do Iron Hands, led by a generic character, just like they do now. Just... No 6+ FNP or the equivalent anymore, or so it seems.

interesting, thanks for the answer. I was less concerned about the lack of FNP as I was about the possibility of them being another lost legion as gw hinted some might be gone.

They do have a named character,.. but he is FW

Iron Hands have exactly 0 special characters. And without chapter tactics at launch, they're basically just a shiny paint job. Well that and a cool conversion kit I am always wanting to steal to help model veterans.

To echo a bit of what was said, this is the index; it was specifically designed, and even announced, to allow everyone to have the same footing at the start of 8th ed.

They're like the FAQs we got when 6th ed was released. Instead of getting people to go back and forth on the internet, they simply printed the entire set of rules of all standing armies into the indexes.

The "unique" flavour of the iron hands and other armies will be in the codexes.

I finally got around to looking over the index and was also dismayed to see them absent from the line-up.
But then a little voice in my head spoke up and told me it must surely mean they're getting their own codex with new toys and special characters.
That little voice was promptly executed for such heretical wishlisting.
