Does anyone else think that choosing targets when splitting fire is going to be rather difficult? I'm not really talking about the easy "I'll shoot the lascannon at that tank and the bolters at those Guardsmen" type, I mean splitting a single weapon across multiple squads.

To give an extreme example, say we have a 50 conscript squad in the 12-24" range from a lot of similar stat infantry targets. You give them frfsrf and they spit out 100 shots. Now, you could pour all 100 onto a single squad, but what if that fire results in a massive overkill? So you should split fire over several units, right? How do you decide how many shots to give to different units? Quick mathhammer? Is overkilling one unit preferable to getting more wounds over several? Or if I have a 3 lascannon HWS, I should really work out the chances of killing a tank by using only 1 or 2 cannons, in case 1 is wasted.

I get the feeling that correct fire split decisions could be one thing that separates good players from great ones. It is an aspect of play that has never really been around before. It really seems like a large change in rules that has opened up a new consideration when attacking.

Certainly an interesting predicament; I really like this element of risk, like your gambling and all you ca do is use your judgement to put yourself in the best position to do the most damage, with the rest being up to the dice. I can already picture taking out multiple squads in one turn in one game, only to be left high and dry the next.

I saw with eyes then young, and this is my testament.

I'm seriously considering taking mixed HWS, with lascannon and 2 mortars/bolters. It would mean I could shoot big targets with 1 lascannon at a time, whilst dumping the anti-infantry power into other units.

5+, but i just randomly picked something with lots of shots. I guess the conscripts themselves may not do enough damage to something like marines to have to worry about this sort of thing, but the principle of how to target your fire is what is interesting.

What sucks more is the possibility Guard can't have the usual 40-50 man blobs unless you want Conscripts, which I don't really care for too much for. It only really matter with attached HWs in a squad. If it was blob in 8th, you could have 25 against that target, and another 25 at the other.
