A friend of mine has had a small tau army for a year and a half now, and I've finally convinced him to play a game with them (7th). I want the game to be relatively fair, so I don't scare him off the hobby.

I'm pretty sure his collection is:

1 Riptide
1 Hammerhead
5? Crisis Suits
10 Fire warriors

I play eldar, so I have no idea how that even adds up in points. I have 3 war walkers/1 wraithlord/1 falcon/1 serpent/1 HW platform, so I could Bright lance it up, but don't want to blow him off the table. Thoughts?

I don't want the best army, just one that isn't an exercise in picking up my models by turn 3.

It doesn't matter if you're not dominating the game; if you have 3-4 x as many models and options than the rest of us and you're still getting new kits, we're still gonna rip on the faction. If I had 100 + Drukhari kits all in plastic to choose from, or 100 + Sisters kits, I think I'd be more likely to be receptive to Space Marine player's complaints about anything.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Perhaps you should build a solid core of dire Avengers, and add few Bright lances as anti tank support. Theres nothing wrong with Bright lances unless you min-maxing those. Fire Prism is also great.

Attitude is more import. Remember Wheaton's Law.
Play with him, not against him. Do stupid stuff with your models for epic reasons if it makes for a better story.

I've found that's a far better way to play. Even when I 'win' tournament games I've often get 'best sportsman' by following Wheaton's Law.

I try for Wheaton's Law everytime I play, never knew it had a name!

So I thinking something like:

Guardians x 15 w HWP[BL]
Guardians x 15 w HWP[BL]

Farseer

Wraithlord, w the sword. I want to try to chop off the riptides head.
