Just need to get something off my chest about primaris space marines. Don't know if this has been discussed before, just something that's been on my mind.
I love the look of the new dudes, and they seem to fill a role on the table not met by previous units, so no problems with any of that stuff. Where I do have a bit of a problem though is with the fluff, or rather what I'm speculating it might be. For the first time we now have two genetically distinct classes of marine, segregated into different units. What does this mean for the upward mobility of the new primaris marines? It always seemed to me that a space marine chapter was an open meritocracy, where any marine could achieve any rank or position so long as he earned it, but will there be ranks or positions closed to primaris marines? Will we get primaris versions of all existing units? Scouts, terminators, tech marines, librarians, etc. Can a primaris marine ascend to the rank of chapter master in an established chapter? And what about regular marines being locked out of new ranks and positions. Will we see the new rank of lieutenant for regular marines? What about regular marine squads with all plasma guns? And even if there are equivalents for everything on both sides we still have the ghettoisation of a chapter through primaris and regular segregated units. Which I guess is nothing new for the Impirium, what with Ogryns and Rattlings in the Imperial Guard, I guess it just seems weird for it to happen to the space marines.anyway, here's hoping the fluff is handled well on release.

Doubtful.
There will be misgivings to start with but in a grim, dark universe where "there is only war" your ability to kill stuff will set you ahead unless your intellegence is so low you require a handler.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |

Primaris are the new marines. They're bigger, better, stronger and more marine than the current marines. Their description in the lore indicates that they accentuate all of the traits of the geneseeds that they come from, so they're even more [insert chapter here] than current guys.
The technology for making Primaris was given to all of the chapters, so it's just like a software upgrade when it comes to making marines. Plus current marines can be upgraded to Primaris. There won't be many old marines left around in the lore for too much longer, and Primaris will just be treated as if marines were always them (to finally rid us of the lore/model contradiction).
So they'll occupy all niches. Mind you, the Primaris counterparts to the old marines will just be that much more badass than the old guys.

That accentuated geneseed buisiness is a clear ploy to get all bespoke on Chapter Specific Primaris models moving forward. Your Blood Angles don't just wear red and look a little fangy around the edges anymore, No sir, now they're super-duper space vampires with fangs as long as a baby's arm, and enough black rage to rage the ragiest rage that ever raged! OMG!
/sarcasm
If they don;t go overboard on that stuff it'll allow them to make the different Marine Chapters a lot more individual, which is actually a very cool idea.

Same here - so, until the book is truly out there for all, it would be wise to not believe strongly either way yet!

Do we need affirmative action to make sure that Primaris Marines aren't systematically oppressing regular Marines?
|
H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...

That would actually be the greatest failure of the fluff surrounding them if it is true. Guilliman has allowed librarians to continue to operate, which is canonically against everything the emperor was creating. So not liking Primaris Marines because of the emperor's vision would be the height of bad writing.

For the life of me I can't find it anywhere, what am I doing wrong
More on topic, I really am not sure how they will handle it, people still seem to think primaris will become the norm, but honestly I'm not sure.

I really hope that they go the lore smart way and have internal conflict and something lost in the Primaris process (like grand strategy comprehension or compassion or life span), something that creates a motivation to not take the upgrade too.
That would be cool and Grimdark. Lock yourself out of chapter leadership (in the old chapters), limit your desirability to be used near other Imperium units, and put a 100? year timer on your life... but be a boss on the battlefield? That's good lore imo.

except we have Primaris Captains whom are just as capable as their peers already eistablished (Primaris Libarians are apparently also a thing, IIRC they're mentioned off handedly)
