I love lahmian medium but the stuff just does not come in quantities big enough to justify the cost. After searching a ton and reading a lot of threads here and elsewhere I saw a lot of suggestions for alternatives and probably as many responses saying the exact opposite. Made me more confused than before I started researching it.

I have p3 mixing medium, for example, but it is milky, thicker, and does not achieve the same result that lahmian medium does, or not close enough for my liking anyway. Is liquitex matte medium going to be similar to lahmian? Looking for something that comes close to the same result but can be bought in larger bottles than 12ml.

Liquitex mm is going to be more like the p3 stuff. It is white/milky and a bit thicker than lm. That milkiness changes the color a bit when wet, but dries clear. Also, mm allows you to add more water to thin before the paint starts doing funny things, so the thickness shouldn't be an issue.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!

Thanks, really appreciate it! I think I will just stick to messing/experimenting with the p3 mixing medium since I have it sitting around than.

Hi dvdmks,

I'm currently working on a new paint range that mimics the GW color range almost 99%, I'm just getting thoughts on it so far and may well send out some trials if there is enough intrest.

I'm looking at supplying in 20ml and 50ml sizes, coverage and shades are almost near perfect replicas.

I've put a link to the thread. Alternative Paint Range equal to Citadel Colours - Thoughts

But in regards to your question, I have been experimenting with brands such as liquitex and that includes oil paints, painting pens, entry level acrylics, poster paints, sharpies etc and nothing ever seems to come close, there either isn't enough coverage, too many layers are required or the cost of the paint makes it prohibitive. My potential line works in the same way as the GW line coverage wise and dries quickly too.

This might not be helpful because I don't have a lot of experience with Lahmian medium, but I typically use Liquitex glazing medium with a tiny bit of Liquitex Matte medium because I don't really like the 'thick' feeling, even if it's clear, but I want to make sure it dries consistently matte.
