I've preordered my 8th ed book. Do I need to preorder all 5 codexes, too? It's better than last time (so far), but will there be an iPad app or PDFs of data sheets?

Thanks,
Bill

Space Marines only = Imperial 1
Non-space marine Imperium force = Imperial 2
Complete access to the Imperium's army (as all Imperial armies are allies now, and can be mixed and matched with eachother) = Imperial1&2

Chaos (CSM/Demons) = Chaos 1

Necrons/Eldar/Dark Eldar = Xenos 1
Orks/Tau/Tyanids/Genestealer Cult = Xenos 2

Lastly, most of the content was leaked here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/6edukc/full_rules_leak/

That should let you flip through the Index' and see what you're in for; that said, Codex's are planned to be released as well - the Index's are a stopgap, to get everyone into 8th edition at the same time. So, expect to purchase a book or two that compliments your chosen faction(s), and introduces new rules (and perhaps models). Lastly, they are planning to release a "Chapter Approved" book once a year, to keep the game constantly updated. What's contained in these remains to be seen; prior "Chapter Approved"s listed new armys, models, fluff, and other unique things - but I see the new CA as a means to update point costs/rules, yearly; if there's anything else, who knows.

Actually, to expand this a bit further and cover other armies.

Eldar Corsairs - FW Xenos and Xenos 1.

Renegade Militia - FW AM, FW Chaos, Chaos 1 and Imperial 2 - the fact Renegades are in the AM book suggests they might possibly get a GSC style rule that allows for alternate Chaos detachments.

The FW Books cover as follows...

FW SM - Space Marines, Inquisition, Sisters of Battle.
FW CSM - Chaos, Daemons

FW Xenos - Orks, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Necrons, Tau
FW AM - AM, Renegades

Now only a CSM player.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Personally I am only going to buy the 8th ed rulebook, I'll wait till actual codexes are released for my CSM rather than pay for an index.

Thanks all. It looks like I'll be getting three books (I1, C, X2 - Dark Angels, Khorne CSM, Tau, Genestealer Cult) - with additional books as needed down the road.

I thought they might pull an AoS kind of deal and make datasheets available for grandfathered models - and put 8th ed data sheets in the box for new models. I have 7th ed codexes - and in some cases more - for all of the above armies - I'm not sure I want tons more fluff for my armies. I was hoping to get away with some data sheets for a while - and if they were available electronically, all the better. Thanks!
