Does anyone know how Allies work in 8th? I am starting Tyranids for 8th edition (was going to do it for 6th but life got in the way) and wondered if I could also use some genestealer cults.

Allies per se are gone, but since Tyranids and GSC have the same Faction keyword, they can work together just fine.

As an added bonus, your bugs get access to the Guard units as well, although don't tell them who they work for just yet.

Yeah, it's all Faction Keyword. As long as your whole detachment and army have at least one Faction Keyword in common you're good to go.
