So I think I'm just missing the relevant rule, but in 8th can you kill a model out of range of your guns if part of the squad is in range. Standard extreme example. 1 Termagant is in range of a Fire Warrior squad, the Fire Warriors do a lot of wounds. Can they kill the other termagants?

When you choose targets for your firing unit, you have to measure range from each model to make sure it is in range of the target with the particular weapon it is firing. Once you've established which of your firing models are within range (and can see at least one model in the target unit) then every model in the target unit can be a casualty from that shooting, regardless if they are out of range and/or line of sight from some of the firing models.

Short answer: yes, as long as all the fire warriors are within range of 1 of the termagants, all of them can be killed.

Yeah in this example I was assuming they were all in range of the one termagant. Thanks.

Heh....looks like the previous incorrect answer was edited.

Oh well, here is a more distinct breakdown of the "Yes" answer.

Yes, you can kill models out of range, as long as at least one model from the unit is in range when you selected your target in the shooting phase.

Shooting Sequence, page 179
1 - Choose unit to shoot with
2 - Choose targets - Relevant text: "In order to target an enemy unit, a model from that unit must be within the Range of the weapon being used and visible to the shooting model."
3 - Choose Ranged weapon
4 - Resolve Attacks
4.1 - Make hit roll
4.2 - Make wound roll
4.3 - Enemy allocates wound
Relevant text: "The player commanding the target unit allocates the wound any model in the unit (the chosen model does not have to be within in range or visible to the attacking unit)."

This is the double edged sword of defending player picking wounded models - they can pick models out of range or hidden....but as models run out, even if the only models left are out of range or hidden...they can be killed as well.
