I want general opinions on this:
Are the unit profiles likely to change from the indices to the codices?
Assuming they do not, how necessary will it be to get the codices, assuming you already have the indices?

We may see points rejiggered as community feedback comes in, and some units, like the Primaris ones, will likely gain new options.

You want general opinions on a topic that nobody outside of GW has a meaningful amount of information to have a worthwhile conversation about?
WTF?

When you put it like that, then the topic just seems ridiculous.
Ok.
I'm making the following assumptions:
Let us assume that the points costs and individual unit profiles remain the same. All that's added are essentially "supplemental" things like chapter tactics, etc.

We can probably extrapolate based on AoS, but you're right, there is no way to truly go anywhere with something we can't reliably know. That said, it's a safe bet that the codex will replace the Index options and be required on its release. Automatically Appended Next Post: Traditio wrote:

Based in this assumption, said options will only matter with pure armies. According to statements made today on the Twitch channel, relics and the like will only be available to pure armies, not mixed ones.

In the first versions not likely, when they do an update to points in year or drop an updated codex things most likely will be updated.

If it's anything like the 3rd edition basic lists vs. codexes, the indexes will be pretty much ignored vs. the depth and power of codexes.

Maybe they will do some adjustement with the new codexs, like how they give a unit of the Khorne in AoS +1 damage (It had 1 with his weapon, then it ended doing 2 damage with his weapon) or a 6+ save to the Bloodreavers with the Blades of Khorne book.
But I doubt that there are gonna be changes in the first batch of Codex. They will add relics, rules, etc... for pure armys. So, if you run a mixed army (Imperium, Chaos, Eldar, etc...) you aren't gonna need any Codex, because you aren't gonna use those special layers of rules.
You can pick one if you want the fluff, or to run a pure army sometimes, etc...

There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I'd expect that too, but I can see them slipping in a points adjustment for anything grossly over or under pointed based on community feedback sith the codex in the meantime. I mean our next game wide adjustment isn't until next June after all.
Even assuming no points adjustment I could see extra rules coming into play as the codees bring new kits (like the Primaris kits with hopefully more unit options, or potentially plastic Aspects) which could lead to points changes as options change. Or at least the full rules for the new units and their stuff. That said power and basic rules should be in the box, but you'll likely need a current codex for matched play.

I thought hey said to expect the first general's handbook by Christmas? That would be a good opportunity.

Hm. True. Six months of player feedback would likely be enough to adjust things from.

If you were to go by what they've done to the Battletomes in AoS then you'll see that they will try to balance unit profiles to make them more reasonable.
For example, in Khorne Bloodbound and to Blades of Khorne they did change a few stat lines such as giving Bloodreavers a 6+ save(they had - in save) and making Korgoraths a bit more of a killing machine than before.
For GW the General's Handbook is just a point change, but the codices themselves are a chance to change the actual army, and I don't think they will refrain from doing so.

My assumption, based on AoS, is that a unit that's in an Index will remain the same if that same unit is in a Codex. However, there may well be new units using the same miniatures which will be different.
For example, take Primaris marines; datasheets for Intercessor, Inceptor and Hellblaster squads are likely to be the same (although they may have more options available), but there might be new squad types - a Command Squad, for example, or something closer to a Tactical Squad with both bolt rifle- and plasma incinerator-armed models.
