Am I missing something in regards to broader keywords like Armies of the Imperium not really having a downside to for unit choice compared to say, Adeptus Astartes/ Astrum Militarium? I was looking through the Chaos index and I couldn't see a negative from choosing Chaos over Astartes Heretics. It gives a massive increase in model range availability without losing bonuses outside of specialty armies like Thousand Sons/ Dark Angels. Am I missing that gives me some sort of downside or HQ tax to taking standard Imperial Guard troopers with my Space Marines compared to purely playing within a chapter?

Right now the game only downside is that there is less synergy between units. My assumption is that codices will provide additional benefits for being more focused.

As an Ad Mech, I use Adeptus Mechanicus, or I lose the effect of my Canticles... I even use Mars to allow optimal use of Cawl...

I will admit on the other hand, I like the ability to buy one or two boxes for a linked faction and get some use out of it without having to fully invest in a new faction to see if I like it. I've got my black legion, and I can throw the new plague models to see if I like them in on the side. The same goes for the rubric box I bought just for the looks originally.

It also lets me throw a single squad of sisters/ custodians/ deathwatch/ grey knights/ legion of the damned in with my dark angels to spice things up like imperial agents did.

I am running an Ad Mech battalion with an Inquisition/assassin Vanguard detachment. Bonus Cp and still get Canticles. Plus the assassins are brutal for their points now.

Oh, absolutely. I'm looking to make use of the Inquisitor model I got with Cawl, but I still use the keywords.

Unless you are building around a specific character there isn't any real benefit to using anything other than <chaos> or <imperium> if you have those as options. Losing reroll 1s isn't nearly as bad when you have a couple conscript blobs getting orders from a company commander soaking wounds for your marines, as an example.
