Hi guys!
I thought I'd do a litt poll on the mawloc vs the trygon and trygon prime inn 8th ed.
I've had a few games with 8th ed rules so far (loving the new nids' btw). And I have yet to see my trygon make up for his points. His ability to get troops quickly into battle is great on paper, but in reality I haven't seen it work too well yet. I've tried the termarant devouer spam, but i haven't found them to do enough to make up for their points . Its hard to maintain synapse and you'll have 5 leadership and they'll all die if you lose a few of them (unless you spend 214 pts on a prime) . Same if you bring hormagaunts, you'd think they'd make a 9" charge with AG for sure, but if ANY of the models has to charge through some sort of terrain, thats -2 to the charge and you'll need a 10 on the dice to make it how often is that gonna happen? 16,7% of the time. I haven't discussed this rule with anyone, but they have to be 9" away right, and they get -2 for terrain, so thats 11", but they have AG so that's 10". So you'll be thinking, "but they can fight if they're 1" away, so they only need 9 inches!" WRONG, they can fight if they're WITHIN 1", 9" gets them to 1" away, but not within 1". So now that we got that out of the way. let's look at the mawloc. At almost half the points of a regualr trygon you get an immediate threat that the opponent has to deal with as soon as he arrives. Giving space for your troops not to get focused too much, and he's T:6 so they will have trouble bringing him down, but he's 104 pts. so who cares, if it was your trygon prime its gonna hurt. Your 20 genestealers with TS got in and killed his monolith on turn 1. If they don't deal with the mawloc the next turn, and its not too crippled, they'll get 10 attacks to the face.

So what do you guys think? Some of you probably has done more playtesting than me.

The Mawloc has a different role from the Trygon variants. The Mawloc is the new Distraction Carnifex that you pop up in front of the enemy to draw fire away from your advancing units (such as non-Distraction Carnifexes). The Trygon is for delivering Genestealers or Warriors and the Prime is for delivering Gaunt varieties. I've not played any 8th yet but I've seen Trygons perform their role quite well in the battle reports I've perused, so I have faith that they are good for what they are.

I very much need to get a few games in but I personally prefur the Trygon Prime from my experiences in the past eddition. This ed I'm thinking it will still be good for 3 big reasons.

1:Immediate threat
Having a monster show up at your doorstep and fire 12 mid/to high str shots into your face and threaten assault is very good.

2:Tag along troop
Having some friends along adds to the threat saturation of the army as a whole wether it's shooty gaunts or hormagaunts or even warriors it's good to have friends.

3: Back field Synapse
Having that mid/back field synapse at the right place at the right time can make or break us bugs.

Now I know the regular Trygon does 2 of these and is cheaper but until I can prove to myself otherwise I think the extra firepower, snypse and smidge of toughness that the prime offers is worth it.

Finally to be honest I rarely used Trygons in the las ed as they were very overshadowed by the Mawloc. (which I did use more often) I'm hopeing this ed will be different. So I voted Trygon Prime but I think Mawloc may possibly be more efficent....

You make some fair points good sir. But if we're honest he is just a distraction and we don't expect him to do anything other than distract the enemy. And the mawloc is just as efficient at that, and if you want to bring troops, you will need the prime. i will try the mawloc next game and I'll tell you how it goes.

Thry have differing roles. They Trygon gives T1 threat by popping out with a unit in tow (or Not popping out ) the Mawloc is still (IMO) our "go to" unit vs Gunlines, and Castles. If a Tau, or Imperial sets up in a Corner with a static battery popping a few (I'd want 2 ) Mawlocs can win the game right then and there.

A Prime with 20 to 30 Homagaunts is a scarey thing, but 6 Warriors might do a good job, and provide Synapse at the point of attack. So if I pop two Trygons with 6 Warriors (2 Cannons) and 30 Hormagaunts, there is not much that will survive that. Haviving multiple paths to victory is a Major upgrade, and it seems to be shared by every faction.

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER

Both, trygon makes people spread out in order to push you back as far as possible. which would give you space to pop the mawloc up into the middle of the army. they probably don't like that either.

I like the Trygon. If I want mortal wounds, I have smite for that. Grab yourself a Flyrant, Swarmlord or a Broodlord. Or be like me and try all three at once!
