Hey Dakka,

New AM (IG) player here. I want to build/collect a semi competitive to competitive 1000 point list. I play to keep this as the core of my army and build up to a competitie 2k list, so I want to start with some good units. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

25 infantry at 1k is a major red flag to me. Objectives are claimed by whoever has more models on the objective and I can't see 20 t3 5+ save dudes being able to stay alive long enough to hold or contest objectives.

It looks like you intend your entire army to get in close to the enemy. This is not a good idea, especially with as few bodies as you're bringing to the table. Having a countercharge unit or two is good, but the whole army can't be set up like this. Just take a look at any of the armies that are designed for close combat to get an idea of how long your 20 vets will last.

The lone russ is not going to accomplish much unless it's Pask or at least a tank commander. The main gun will hit 50% of the time and the heavy bolters will be hitting at -1 every turn you move.

My recommendation is to play to the Guard's strengths. Which are loads of cheap infantry backed up with heavier hitters and the orders of their officers. Take at least one set of conscripts to absorb the first charge. At 1k points you can field 80-100 bodies and still have room for a tank or two (6 squads with lascannon/plasma gun and 50 conscripts is about 550).

You have almost nothing in the way of dealing with tanks or MC.

a single melta vet might take out one tank but cant forget what might be lurking inside of it.

i feel like you might want to chuck in a few Lascannons some where.

maybe the lemon or sentinals.
also slightly lacking in the heavy infantry killer.

though at 1k points i dont know.
imho.

Thanks for the info.

I want to try a more aggressive LR with triple HF and battle cannon. The 5x bullgryn seem to pair well with it. The chimera are pretty tanky with their new wounds and HFs on them are pretty good. I think the LR would be pretty damn tany at 1k and the good thing about HFs is that they auto hit.

I'm trying to stay away from Mass infantry armies, but I see your points. I just have to play smart around objectives. The chimeras are tanky enough to protect the vets untill l they are needed, and they do some dmg.
