I am seeing this mistake repeated everywhere so I feel the need to pull out my old soapbox from the closet:

When using matched play in 8th edition, Deployment type is randomly chosen.

Repeat: Deployment type is RANDOMLY chosen.

Page 216, top left corner there is a paragraph stating this. The missions refer to this when they say "player X then determines Deployment type." The method used for determination is a random D6 roll. The method is not simply selecting which type you want.

I see where the confusion lies so I'm not trying to belittle anyone, but I do think that it is a very important distinction to make.

Ok, sermon over, thank you for your time.

I mean, you could roll randomly. Or you could pick it.

It really doesn't matter how the deployment type is selected. Hell, you could use an Ouija board to determine deployment type if you really wanted.

In my FLGS, you play a match of 40k to determine who gets to pick deployment type.

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

Clearly you can do whatever you want, I'm merely pointing this out because it may be important for tourney play, as it can mitigate unfair advantages due to specific deployment types. I will be going with the random route as it increases tactical thinking requirements for the players.

Determine it, like everything else important in your life, with the outcome of a children's card game.

I'd add to that psa that about half the deployments are god awful to figuer out if you're playing with a lot of terrain on the board.

Do yourself a favour and whether choosing or randomizing, do these 3 and save yourself the headache:

dawn of war, search and destroy, hammer and anvil

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Now that's a good method! However, who picks the deployment type of that match?

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

Isn't that exactly the same as 7th Edition?

On the Internet

We used arm wrestle for it. Though due to some unfair hiring of third parties to represent the players due to a of physical ability on some player's parts it was then changed to thumb wrestling.

But since now the more fit, but less "pro-gamer" type of players are upset because the gamers keep beating them to a pin.

We're currently looking for new options.

Don't some eternal war missions have a player pick the deployment?
