Hi all,

I'm more of a painter than a gamer and absolutely love painting tyranid models. With 8th edition here, I've decided to put together an army to play competitively with (hopefully).

The game plan is to have the 2 exocrines and the biovores in the backfield raining down hell. They'd be baby sat by the Hive Tyrant and the Warriors (who could also break off for objectives). The hive Tyrant can also use onslaught and catalyst on the heavies if needed.

Meanwhile up front everything drops down/pops up in the enemies face. The tyrannocyte delivers the pyrovores, the trygon prime pops up providing synapse and out come the 30 Gants (20 of the devil variety, with 10 to meat shield them).

I'm hoping that the turn 1 alpha strike and nice mix of close range and ranged sees me well. Do you think that this would be competitive?

I welcome your help and constructive criticism. As a side note, what would you advise that I add to bring the list up to 2000 points?

Well, with a Walking Tyrant getting some Tyrant Guard is a must, based on your theme mayby Hive Guard are a good add in as they have long range fire power, I'd also want more Gaunts to bubble wrap my shooters, otherwise you are likely to get Deep stuck like crazy.

Good luck! and good hunting!

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER

Is the tyrant adding much to your list? I'd suggest maybe switching for a Prime if you are going with warriors for synapse. That is also a place you could get some points for extra gribblies, or maybe upgrade the Warrriors to Shrikes to aid more with their secondary job of objective grabbing.

This would be a nice, fine list for club games I'd say. They pyrovores (whilst much better now) are still not really competitive, but at this smaller point size with less models on the table they are not terrible either. Not Tournament worthy, but fun and competetive enough that you will win some games with it if you learn to pilot it well.

More gaunts to bubble wrap my shooters is a great idea, being deep struck is a weakness there. Hive guard for the sake of more long range fire power I'm on board with, maybe for the 2000 point list though. The tyrant wouldn't really be your typical walking towards the enemy type affair. More sitting with the artillery and protecting them/dissuading deep strikes/synapse.

You're completely right, the tyrant isn't really adding much to the list and I'd been toying with switching to a Prime too. I think I'll do that and add some extra gribblies to bubble wrap my backfield shooters. Also noted on the pyrovores!

Thank you for the positive feedback on my list, I think you get the idea of the general theme that I'm going for. I'm still in the planning phase so don't mind going back to the drawing board to develop a more competitive list. I'd rather re-build the list to be competitive and enter tournaments.

Is there a list with a theme similar to this that could be competitive? I'd like an exocrine and a tyrannocyte dropping a threat in there somewhere.

Really appreciate the help so thanks in advance!

I've been playing around with a similar list at 2000. I like adding Venomthropes for the -1 to hit bubble against my firebase and, for me, I like stealers and a broodlord for the forward/drop threat. I tend to use GSC version, though.

Devilgaunts are a nice option to drop, the Trygon is not the delivery method I would choose in this point size due to the expense, a pod is cheaper. Also, I think Trygon's benefit a lot from assault based support being around letting them 1-2 a unit with some stealers for instance.

So let me see, sticking with your basic theme and 1500:

Battalion Detachment (1264)
HQ (250)
Tervigon 250

Troops (336)
20 Termagants, 10 Devourers 120
20 Termagants, 10 Devourers 120
24 Termagants 96

Elites (75)
3 Venomthropes 75

Heavy Support (528)
Exocrine 228
Exocrine 228
3 Biovores 108

Dedicated Transports (276)
Tyranocyte 138
Tyranocyte 138

Have the tervigon jog forwards keeping one of your bubble wrap gaunts within synapse (daisy chain is fine) get it within 6" of your drop gaunt squads (again daisy chain the fleshborer gaunts backwards) and they will have rerolls to hit and to wound of 1 on the drop. the Tervigon can replenish injured squads a bit. The Exocrine and Biovores don't need synapse that much anyway. If they do need it you would have to tether then to the tervigon, keeping them just in synapse range. Alternatively, switch the Venomthropes for Warriors to give a nice synapse block, or, when the FW malanthrope comes out one of those for both -1 to hit and synapse! Don't know it's points yet, but it has always had both abilities.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I can't swear its competitive (needs playtesting), but it has all the elements you need I think.
