Subject: Dire Avenger Squad sizes?

Hi everyone,
I have a box of 10 Dire Avengers and originally planned on making a unit of 10 troops with an Exarch (as shown on the box). However, the box comes with enough pieces that I could make 2 groups of 5 DAs with an Exarch in each. I figure if I moved them on the table as one unit, it would be like having a group of 10 but with 2 Exarchs rather than just the one. Just wanted to gather some thoughts on this, do you guys think it's better to have 2 groups of 5 or one group of 10?
cheers

Do what you want. With the new morale rules, larger squads aren't necessarily much better. If you can afford the points - run two squads.

It's going to depend on the unit. Generally with Aspect Warriors you're better off with multiple small units because the Exarchs are much more efficient than the regular warriors. They cost the same per model and have an extra attack and wound, and often additional special abilities and access to better wargear options. With DAs the Exarch gets a free 4++ and an extra gun. This is particularly true if you're playing using power ratings rather than points, which you should be if you want to use DAs at all.

Thanks for the help guys, didn't know the Exarch cost the same as a normal DA. Looks like I'll take 2 squads then

Unless squad has special bespoken rule giving boost from having bigger squad generally MSU is the way to go. Free leader upgrades allowing also special attacks, less trouble from battleshock(5 squad is basically almost immune to morale...If you get shot badly enough you need to worry about that often you are wiped out anyway!), ability to control board in wider area...

Small Dire Avenger squads riding in Shuricannon Wave Serpents look like they will be pretty strong in 8th edition.
