Hello, not sure if this goes in this section of the forum, but I'm posting here since I'm into 40k for the modeling and the fluff, I'm not an active player. If not , a mod could move it to where it belongs.

I'm planing to build the ultimate tank buster blood angels squad. My plan so far is to do a squad of 5 company veterans with jump packs. I'll arm 3 with meltaguns, one with inferno pistol and power fist, and the sergeant will also have inferno pistol and fist. Does it sound good? I'm not really interested in point efficiency, what I'm asking is would this setup be the proper way to deal with tanks? Also, company veterans sound like HQ bodyguards, but I'm not running anyone along with them. I though I might build a regular captain with sanguinary guard wings, arm him with a combi melta and a relic blade and have him leading them, but it doesnt sound right. A captain would not be performing such a narrow task in my mind. He would be in the midst of the fray, commanding the fight. He would give this task to another commander, but who?

Truthfully, this would be a bad way of dealing with tanks.

Assuming it can get to tanks unmolested, yeah, it can do damage. But that is a really big ask for this unit, as it is really obviously threatening and defensively not fantastic- most armies will simply hose it down with plasma (or local equivalent) and those five veterans will die horribly. With split fire, it isn't even difficult for enemies to do so.

Points efficiency isn't the issue- its what you could be taking in the same role- a quad lascannon predator, which is a lot more durable (and the S9 is useful for ticking the wound rolls over to 3+), or even 10 devastators with 4 lascannons, which have 6 ablative wounds to protect the AT with.

Inferno pistols also have severe limitations, specifically that if you drop them in to protect them from enemy shooting, the pistols are out of range. They probably won't even get to fire before this unit gets swarmed under or blasted to pieces.

it just doesn't seem useful other than gambling on getting something important on a suicide drop, and there are better ways to pull that off.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

If you like the idea of a suicide-drop squad, actually, a squad of Devastators with multimeltas plus a combi-melta in a drop pod could get some work done. That'd be very expensive and not a great, efficient choice, but it could work.

As for who's leading them: by the fluff you're looking at a minor officer, maybe a Lieutenant, but the Primaris Lieutenants won't work here. A Techmarine is an odd choice but workable, though he doesn't buff the Devastators at all. You could use a Captain (by the rules) but fluff him as a Lieutenant, or you could try a Librarian for a similar effect (go combi-melta+force sword, on this guy; S4 AP-3 is more reliable against most tanks than S6 AP-1 with a force stave).

Welp, after the blood angels lost the double melta's assault squads, flying company vets looked like the next place to look for.
