OK, this seems to be the cheesiest thing I've heard so far in 8th.

If there is a character behind a screen, but the models in the screen are fairly widespread, you can snipe the character with ANY shooter or psyker.

Just park two vehicles so they block LOS against the screening models on either side of a gap. Then put a shooter or psyker between them.

The shooter cannot see the screens...the character is the only thing he can see. So the character can then be targeted.

Question: RAW legal? RAI legal? Just a "jerk" move?

"...closest visible..."

RAW, that seems to be legal.

Totally legit, but damn hard to accomplish. And really is only achievable because of an opponents mistake.
If your character is surrounded, rather than just behind, there shouldn't be a way to see just that character. There should be models visible in all direction around the character.

Heldrakes can move like 60" behind your line and now you don't even need to "block the other units LoS". A Heldrake can literally just move to make the character be the closest.

This is why you should surround you characters, not just put them behind units

Surrounding won't help much if the only models you can see through the gap are the ones on the far side. These would be farther away than the character.

You only need to block LOS on the front guys.

Not sure if I understand correctly but couldn't this be countered by having a model right in front of the character?

As long as you see one model of a unit, if its unit is closer than the character you can't shoot him/her.
Even if the models you see are effectively further away than the character: the unit they belong to is still closer.

If you can totally hide any unit closer than the character you're aiming for then yes. But as other mentioned, it's pretty hard.

On your turn, move the shooter so it can see through a gap. Move blocking vehicles to mask all other models.

Hmm, you seem to be right. Still it could be effective if the screen is depleted but you still can't move around it, or you don't expect to be able to blast it away with other units first.

If the character is truly "surrounded", there is absolutely no way to block LoS of the model in front of him without also blocking LoS to the character too.

Overhead view- C = the character, m = a model in a unit:

- m m m m
m m C m m
-m m m m

So how, again, can you "isolate' the Character? there will always be a model "in front" of it no matter where to place your vehicles.

A new day, a new time zone.

It's doable, but highly situational, and kinda silly. You might get away with it once, but after that trying to set up 2 rhinos or whatever with the assassin behind them to pull off the squeeze shot isn't going to be particularly hard to counter. The required positioning in super fiddly.

Doable but not very effective. You need 2 vehicles at least which already puts you at over 200 points not to mention if you need enough shooting in that space to kill the model in a single turn. Just bring snipers instead, or something with fly to hop over the troops shoot the the guy and then charge him.
