Doesn't matter. If you're modeling them, use the right size base and just do them as you wish.

My friend usesses one because he is kinda cheap and just bought a bunch of bases and stuck one each to them. I used around 6 each to make it slook more like a swarm.

Ultramarine 6000 : Imperial Knights 1700 : Grey Knights 1000 : Ad mech 500 :Nids 4000 : Necrons 500 : Death watch 500

Not cheap I guess but look really nice. 3 would be fine but the correct answer is probably as many as you can afford. Large ripper swarms look nice.

Ideally 5, most people settle for 3 or 4 depending on how many you wanna get out of a box. This is cuz Rippers traditionally had 3 wounds so people thought that's a good minimum number.
