Do these guys pass muster in 8th? Can they be fielded in any large, competitive quantity? I've been on the fence about getting them.

I mean, large is relative. They're elite so you're not gonna make a horde of them compared to what other armies put out. If you're going for an elite army though, they're probably the best Troop slot unit there is (thus letting you access more CP's). So I'd say yes.

I mean, would four squads be an effective backbone, or will they be terminators without deepstrike, and die footslogging?

Depends what you want them to do. If you want them to ward enemy units away from objectives or more fragile units and not die for almost the whole game then yeah, they'll do it fine. They get a fair number of attacks so they'll throw down with large groups of melee enemies too.

You want them to cross the map and charge an Imperial Guard 200 conscript gunline? No, they're probably not gonna do that (even if they won't die for forever either).

I've thought of using a single squad in a land raider with 3 imperial knights inn a 2k army. May be a thing if you wanted a smaller elite force.

How would I go about building a Custodes army? They don't have any HQs, and don't seem to have any specific formations either. Apologies if this is a stupid question.

I'm still pretty new to 40K and haven't really got a handle on list building yet. I'm not looking to make some kind of competition list, I just have the Talons box and would like to put some of those shiny fellers (and the ladies - same applies to the Sisters of Silence) on the table.

I'd also quite like to know how to ally them to a different Imperial army. Keywords also confuse me! Loads of stuff has the faction keyword Imperium, but what does this mean? Can you make some kind of crazy patrol detatchment with a HQ from Admech, troops fro the Adeptus Custards, fast attack from Dark Angels, etc?

On the gw stream they said they were an hq and troop choice so if that is true though not printed so I don't know. You want supreme command 3 squads armed however 1 banner 3 land raiders and fill out rest of points. Gets you 3 additional command points.

Hmm, I've checked the book and the custodian guard squad is just a troop choice in there. Odd.

What about as a add-on to another imperial army? I quite like the idea of a squad of them and Saint Celestine in the same army. Not for any tactical reasons, just aesthetic ones.

I like to use them as better GK terminators myself. They work great with Celestine too, but she works great with everyone.

I am hoping some of their 30k models get 40k rules. or at least that gw makes them a full army. seems like talons of the emperor and burning of prospero were primers to get kist in hands as auxillaries to space marines and imperial forces, I hoipe this was just priming the pump for a full custodies release.

that said they can work fairly well, are fast enough as is just make sure to give them a pimpmobile (land raider)

as for a current HQ to use I would say run allies with astra militarum, get a tank commander and sprinkle in a couple las cannon upped leman russes and/ or heavy weapons terams to chip away at armor so the custodies get to attack the juicy center

I feel like forge world is doing 30k Custodes termies because 40k is gonna see them adopt a Gravis style “terminator” type armor for that armor tier. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense why forge world would be doing Custodes termies and not GW main.

Nope. Doesn't mean there won't be, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

It's annoying that the units have different options in 30k to 40k. You can't easily swap them across. It's not clear what the fluff is - did they break all their skimmers in the heresy and have to get land raiders? Did they forget how to drive in 10k years without going outside?

I was thinking of picking up the talons of the emperor boxed set after reading the Mastor of Mankind by the peerless ADB i'm really keen on playing with them.

I was thinking of running them in a mixed imperial force with a knight and something else,

Does anyone have any good strategies for running this style of list?
