Im curious how good the Broodlord are and Im trying to make a list with them. Battalion Detachment 1x Broodlord – 162pts – 1x Broodlord – 162pts – 15x Genestealers – 180pts - 15x Genestealers – 180pts - 1x Trygon Prime - 214pts - Biostatic rattle - AG 30x Termagaunts - 208pts - 22x Devourers 6x Tyranid Warriors - 150pts - 2x Venom Cannon - 2x ScyTal & Fleshooks each 3x Hive Guard - 144pts - Impaler Cannons 3x Hive Guard - 144pts - Impaler Cannons 1x Exocrine - 228pts - 1x Exocrine - 228pts - Total 2000pts - 10 deployments So the Broodlords are behind a bunch of Genestealer, Trygon Prime pops up with the Devilgaunts who shoots and cause a nice distraction for the Genestealers to run fast up the board. The backfield has solid shooting with 2 Exocrines and 2 units of Hive guards with 2 extra venom cannon guns from the Warriors shooting, meatshielding and synapsing.

I assume that you mean genestealers when you say raptors and "gr" means Broodlords.
I think your list could certainly work as well but the warriors have their use more than just synapse (although synapse is still important considering I've got 700+pts of strong shooters which I certainly want to be able to choose where they shoot, a smart opponent will take out the synapse if its the minimal 3 warriors that's babysitting)
They also are there to protect from close combat threats who will try to tie up the shooters. 6 warrriors with fleshhooks will be pushing out 36 Str4 attacks in close combat which can be a very significant threat to a lot of stuff and they are actually very tough when you don't upgrade them too much (22pts for three T4 wounds with a 4+ ArSv is really very decent) .
Also a second venom cannon is nice

yes GR is broodlord and raptors are genoraptors.
if you play a list like that and your opponet reach your backfield usually means you have already lost the game, if you sawrm the opponent he shouldn't have chances to threat your fire units, mu 2 cents, btw i love warriors so for me your list is fine.

Your Termagaunt brood can't have 32 models. You'll have to remove 2 of them. With the 8 points saved you can buy adrenal glands for the Trygon in order to give it a fair chance at a turn 1 charge (8" on 2d6 instead of 9").

I don't know, a heldrake could easily go over and around the swarm with their 30" move. and a deepstriking army could also get behind the swarm to the backfield, especially if he wait until after I moved forward (Either by waiting a turn before coming out of reserve or just by not getting first turn) I just prefer the idea of some close combat to protect the shooters. oops, good call on the too many terms Zimko, an AG on the trygon is definitely a good idea and was part of the points I paid for I just forgot to add it in the list.

So I like this list a lot. I ran something similar and I had a problem with my devil gaunts getting in the way of my Trygon Prime (but that's my own fault). But I still really like the Combo. I also like the broodlords better than running Hive tyrants (my hive tyrants got shot down pretty fast).
I actually have been having a hard time figuring out my backfield as well. I dont like the Exocrine or Hive guard all that much because lack of Synapse (and they really require bubble wrap).
I think Tyranid shrikes or warrior's could be a good direction. Another option is Neophyte hybrids in rock grinders. Or some GSC tanks

Shrikes would be uselessly expensive, they are there to stick around the Hive Guard and Exocrines who are so super stuck in one place with their rules. Warriors are so cheap when armed with double scytal at 20pts. This results in them being quite tough for their price, they have a nice long range gun and provide synapse. An alternative is Zoanthropes, they dont fight well or shoot far but they are tougher and a bit more supporty, I have a hard time imagining they will be as much worth their points. I've still avoided looking too much into the genestealer cults, not sure what those do.

Sorry you must have misunderstood me, I was not recommending Shrikes for protecting the exocrine. I was recommending them for fast backfield objective grabbers. I agree they do seem like a pricey option but the move distance on them is pretty attractive. I don't think you can protect your hive guard and exocrine without sacrificing too much punch. And that is a lot of backfield points to loose first turn from a plasma deep strike (or something similar). But its very possible I am wrong, I have only played two games of 8th so far. Let me know what you find out! I am excited to see what works. Goodluck.

well if your fighting an alpha strike army you can keep the Genestealers as bubble wrap so I'm more thinking about when I move forward with them and the opponent tries to go around them. That's when you need some babysitters and the warriors fill that role perfectly, cheap tough synapse with a decent 36" gun that can fight well enough. I'm not trying to spend too much points into defending the shooters but 150pts is a good price for 18 wounds with synapse and a coupla shots. I still wonder about the broodlords effectiveness but this seems like im giving them a chance to shine in a list like this. as for the shrikes I am so happy they got an ArSv of 4+, thats really cool. I would generaly see them more as advancing agressive units than backfield objective holders but maybe that could work too

I wonder if 2 units of 3 Rippers would be enough to space out enemy deepstrikes near your backline.

perhaps for the first turn but he could wait one turn, shoot them down and then deepstrike next turn, Rippers also don't offer Synapse so would not replace the Warriors.
