I feel like this has been bought up in another thread, please feel free to point me there if it's already been covered. Could not find it.
Now that flyers have to maintain a minimum distance from other models, how do you measure that distance? Do you measure from the base or from the model? Do you account for vertical distance in measuring, or do do you treat models as though they are on the same plane?
Played my Fire Raptor in a game last night vs Orks. My opponent brought several giant mobs that covered several feet of space on the table. I was able to move the Fire Raptor's base just beyond one of the mobs, but the tail of the ship stuck out over the boys. My opponent claimed the tail itself matters for the purpose of measuring distance, as it's a vehicle and you don't measure distance from bases on vehicles.

Can you give me a source on the "flyers have to maintain a minimum distance from other models" claim? I thought they just had to follow the 1" rule as normal and that would be measured to and from the hull in real distance, not on a 2D plane. Between a based model and a non-based model, you measure from the base to the hull, so unless your tail was literally and inch+base thickness from the ground it shouldn't have a problem with ground troops.

All the book says is you must be more than 1" away unless you're charging, and the base is part of the model. So, flyers just have to keep their hull and their base 1" away. If the tail of a plane is above enemy models, but still more than 1", it's perfectly legal.

From 'Tools of War' ( pg. 176, 8th edition rulebook):
Distances in Warhammer 40,000 are measured in inches (") between the closest points of the bases of the models you’re measuring to and from. If a model does not have a base, such is the case with many vehicles, measure to and from the closest point of that model’s hull instead. You can measure distances whenever you wish.
And from the 'Falcon' datasheet on page 36 of Index: Xenos 1:
Hover Tank: Distance and ranges are always measured to and from this model’s hull, even though it has a base.
If it has a base you measure to the base unless specifically told otherwise, then you measure from the closest point of the model's hull.

if a model has a base, all measurements are done from the base
so only your base must be 1" away from other models

And just to expand on this, none of the Eldar "Flyers" have the Hover Tank ability. Only the hovering tanks have that, go figure.
So as this relates to the OP question, just measure from the base and keep it 1" away like everything else
