So I've recently finished a bunch of GK using an airbrush and with the metallics (especially those from airbrushing) prone to weathering, I wonder if anyone has any ideas on how to protect the paint job? Is a satin varnish the way to go or the 'traditional' high gloss follow by a matt to bring it down a better option? Or perhaps another way?

Many Thanks,

E.P.

I find that Matt kills metallics while super glossy looks wrong. I'm not saying it's the best option, but I would choose Satin then brush-on Matt to any exposed flesh.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I find the gloss followed by matte is best for pieces you intend to game with.

no real way to ignore the gloss im afraid.

even the lightest coat of satin will reduse the metallic effect from the silver paint.

if in doubt allways do a test first. there is bound to be some leftover parts on the GK sprues you can test on.

Tried satin, dulled the metallic too much for my liking. Anyone know of good brands of gloss and matte varnishes? I'm going to try a gloss coat followed by a matte coat and just a plain gloss coat. As I mentioned, I've got an airbrush so airbrushable varnishes are also welcomed

Thanks

Pebeo makes a great matte varnish. You have to brush it on, and I suggest watering it down 50/50, but it kills shine pretty well without dulling/frosting.

This model was varnished in Purity Seal then the Pebeo Matte. There's some reflections left on the cloak and just enough on the metallics to keep them looking metal without being all glossy.
