Hi guys, was playing with a friend earlier today and realised that poitioning 2 units in a checkerboard formation, means that enemy units that charge them struggle to NOT be within one inch of a unit they did not charge! Are we playing this correctly, and can 2 friendly units move within each other like states. If so positioning any groups of models like this, denies the majority of charges... please xplain

You can declare to charge both units. In fact you can declare to charge all units within 12", there is no requirement to reach all of them or even end up in base to base with all of them.

All units you declare a charge against do get to fire overwatch though.

Yes two units can mix like that , but you can declare a charge against any, and multiple units, as long as they are within 12" which renders that a non issue.

But surely that means 2 units of tau would between them if you charged both as you said, would get 4 overwatch attacks???

Correct. Just declare a charge against both units, otherwise it is a legitimate placement of models.

One thing to note, since they are in a checkerboard is that a lot of their models probably won't be able to fight in close combat. You can only activate one unit at a time and can't move models through other models.

I'm not missing anything, 4 overwatch attacks in total from supporting fire?

No idea where you are getting 4 attacks.

In your example it's two intertwined units, which is two units firing overwatch at a charging unit. It's also worth noting its possible to charge a single unit if two are intertwined still.

You end up with 1, maybe 2 models within 1" of the corner most enemy model from one of the units-not quite in base to base to keep out of 1" of enemy models Then consolidate in which has no limitation to moving within 1" of enemy models and does not give overwatch.

Edit- also you can't move through models, friendly or otherwise as a general rule.

His theory: If you declare a charge against both units, both units get Overwatch and by RAW, they're both eligible to trigger For the Greater Good from the other squad, which allows friendly units to Overwatch when a unit is the target of a charge.

However, Skalathrax, you may want to re-read the final sentence of FtGG again, which states that firing Overwatch using FtGG means you can't fire Overwatch again that turn.

I would say no.. As using 'Greater Good' means they 'cannot overwatch again that turn'

I could see a silly argument for it... but if anything would max out at 3 (due to ordering)

Charge 1 of them
Plant 1 model 1" away from a single enemy model
Pythagorean Theory states that this is 100% safe and legal.

During the Fight Phase, Pile in the rest of your models.

Note, you can move base to base against enemy models you did not charge during the Pile In.

!!!!!!BUT!!!!!!!

You can NOT set any of your attacks against enemy models you did not charge.

6+ = 6/36 | Reroll 1s = 7/36 | Reroll Misses = 11/36 ||||||| 5+ = 12/36 | Reroll 1s 14/36 | Reroll Misses = 20/36 ||||||| 4+ = 18/36 | Reroll 1s 21/36 | Reroll Misses = 27/36
3+ = 24/36 | Reroll 1s 28/36 | Reroll Misses = 32/36 ||||||| 2+ = 30/36 | Reroll 1s 35/36 ||||||| Highest of 2d6 = 4.47

This if he bunchs his units like that use your pile in to nab multiple units without having to deal with over watch. Unless Tau.

He would not get 4 attacks he would get 2 may 3 at most. But as far as I can tell models using Greater Good have to be ineligible to fire overwatch otherwise.

A number of misconceptions have been made in this thread.

1) You cannot prevent a charge through checkerboarding multiple units together. Since you only need to get within 1" of a single model from a unit to be able to charge it, you can always do so between one of the two checkerboarding units. Then when piliing-in you'll be able to move within 1" of the other unit, bringing more of the charging models into range to attack.

2) You also have the option to declare charges against both units that are checkerboarding. Yes, that does mean they'll both get to overwatch, but so what? Its still an option if you want it.

3) That somehow 2 Tau units that are within 6" of each other that were both targets of the same charge could somehow both fire overwatch and then again via For the Greater Good. That is not possible. For the Greater Good simply allows a unit to fire overwatch 'as if they were also targeted'. So since both units were already targeted by the charge, they can both fire overwatch, but neither of them can utilize For the Greater Good, as they were already targeted.

Not really.. but if he did the 4 OW.. and the charge failed.. he couldn't overwatch again if something else charged in
