Greetings. I was wondering if you could make a 2000 point army for Tyranids if you are on a budget? By that referring to a somewhat competitive list at a lower cost. Seems like in the current state (might change in a couple of weeks) horde armies are pretty good. So I was thinking of the content from The swarm box and the Start collecting Tyranids box. But then what?

A couple of Brood lords, and a couple of Trygons. Currently Trygon Tunnels look like "must have" units, and Brood lords are good HQ's that buff our best CC troops (Genestealers).

Good luck! And welcome to the Hive Mind!

Sounds like you have enough budget for 2000 pts list of various types especially if you get 10%-15% discount from somewhere.

If you wanted to go horde mode, you could get locate the Tyranid Swarm box or 2 for a great start;

Tyranid Swarm - £105.00 or 2x £210.00
Index Xenos 2 - £15.00 (assuming you don't already have it)

This then leaves you with £225.00 to get some big beasties after you've done a little research to see which ones will be most useful to you

Swarmlord.

Genestealers tend to be pretty cheap too, given the model is 40,000 years old

I'm an outsider to nids however I do know them well. I would recommend 1 or 2 swarm boxes, 2 trygons, a start collecting, a broodlord, 3-5 boxes of gene stealers and a heavy support (exocrine etc)

I started from buying used models from another player (those models was, like, 1500 points). Then I added 2x Swarm-box and Start-Collecting-box + some venomthropes. I also ordered from Forge World some devourer-arms for tyrants and from Wayland Games some claw-arms for cultists. Now I'm about to add another Start-Collecting, and most likely my third Swarm-box! LOL

3 start collecting boxes and a tyranid swarm is what I bought. It gave me a swarmlord and 2 flyrants + 9 warriors 40 term 40 horm and more gargoyles than I care to count plus a carnifex and some ripper swarm. About 400 bucks - which in Euros I imagine is much less.

There was briefly a "Tervigon Brood Progenitor" set. It was basically pennies more than a Tervigon set while coming with a squad of Termagants. Considering how the two require each other to function and are fairly powerful, this is a good set to get if you can find it (although not many places have it anymore).

Otherwise Tyranid Swarm + Start Collecting Tyranids + 1 Carnifex Brood/Trygon is a good place to start.

A Hierophant bio titan is about 2k points almost on the dot. iirc

and is a little more than half your budget

but in general check ebay if you dont mind putting a little elbow grease in.

otherwise starter sets are often full of value.

If going the super-heavy route you could always convert a few Hierodules from Tervigons for a quarter of the price.

Bought the start collecting box, a brood lord, two boxes of Genestealers, tyrannofex/tervigon and lastly a tyrannocyte. That was all that was in stock from the stuff I wanted

Well if you are up for converting you can buy multiples of the Start Collecting set and convert a heck of alot of it fairly easily.

Hive Tyrant can be converted into carnifex's, a harpy, maleceptor, Terrvigon, maybe a few others depending how picky you are.

The warriors can be converted into Raveners, Hive Guard and Tyrant Guard, Lictors. Shrikes with the gargoyale wings.

The gargoyles: obviously if you take the wings off you got termagants. But if you really want the hordes then just grab a Swarm box - it also gets you a carinfex which its parts can be used for more convincing conversions with the Hive Tyrant.
